A 'signing off' segment from Alex. What a lovely guy, and here's wishing him the best in his future endeavours, including of course the next VG:

Again a real shame, the constant threat of hitting a ufo must be terrifying.

Now Sam Davies is out.
Boris better watch out as Alex and Sam were the two I was supporting before he ended up on my radar are now in Cape Town...
Reminds me I'll be missing Christmas in Cape Town at the mother's in law's thanks to the pandemic. I should have tagged a ride with Alex or Sam.

28 knots... what a speed. Bravo Boris!

Its really looks like Boris is now a contender. He seems like such a nice guy and generous with his many vlogs in three languages.
Was funny listening to some ex-crew mates of his the other day. Apparently if you sail with him you need to lock up your chocolates and Haribo :)

Just watched this weekly update. more fun than the dailies.
These competitors really do come across as lovely people. A great segment in the day 5 of them were in sight of each other half way around the world.

Isabelle fifth overall. Ahead of Boris. All very tight nearby. Wow

The leaders have passed Cape Horn and those at the tail end are passing Australia and New Zealand...see tracking map.
Unfortunately Isabelle JOSCHKE had to retire 2 days ago, 4 days after passing the Horn

Fifty miles covering the first five according to the website and just short of the doldrums.
Unbelievably close coming in to the last couple of weeks. I dipped out for a bit when Alex Thomson, and then Sam Davies both had to retire. Have been following Pip Hare though, proper highs and lows in her videos, even replacing a rudder whilst in the Southern Ocean. Really impressive.

Can’t believe in two weeks time the race is over...
What a foto finish sprint...
Incredible race.
8 boats within 100 miles. That’s nothing.

It really is amazingly close.
Go Boris....
Although they all deserve credit.

Re the table above doesn't Jon Le Cam have time credits from when he attended a rescue.
Steve.
Incredible it’s so close. I wonder where Alex would have been?
Louis Burton first back into the northern hemisphere:
Louis Burton, the 35 year old Saint Malo skipper of Bureau Vallée 2 was the first Vendée Globe skipper to break back into the northern hemisphere last night, crossing the Equator at 1911hrs UTC last night. Just less than one hour later and some 50 miles to the east of him Charlie Dalin crossed second and 37 minutes later, close to the wake of Burton, Germany's Boris Herrmann also returned to the 'home' hemisphere.
So just one hour and 37 minutes separated the top three boats and on the early morning rankings that equates to just 22 miles between first and third in terms of distance to finish. When Yannick Bestaven brought Maître Coq IV across at 0236hrs, 3hrs 30mins after fourth placed LinkedOut the top five had crossed within seven hours.
And so increasingly it is looking like this Vendée Globe will be decided after the Canary Islands and who best negotiates a high pressure ridge from there and hooks into the low pressure system which accelerates the leaders towards Les Sables d'Olonne and the finish line.
Speeds have remained high among the leading pack, Damien Seguin (Groupe APICIL) seemed slowed - under a cloud perhaps - while Burton, Herrmann and Ruyant have all been over 20kts consistently and the German skipper is just 22 miles off the lead. And it does seem like the option to the west has been profitable, faster and so we may see a new leader soon...
So very close. Let's remember that both Yannick and Boris have time adjustments for helping with the rescue.

The trials of a round the world sailor...link...Pip Hare writes this morning:
"After the events of yesterday I know I am special. I have had what I believe to be a unique Vendee Globe experience. I have been stung on the back by a Portuguese Man O War Jelly Fish. And yes, I know strictly they are not jelly fish but what ever they are, the little blighters are evil.
I have always embraced that 'next level' concept of a challenge but I am not sure this is the direction I had in mind...
Incredible race, so close after all they have been through. Proper adventure sailing.
Am I correct that if the race finished as per this mornings standings (Boris Hermann only 60Nm behind the leader), with his time bonus removed he could potentially win the race?

It could be a long drawn out finish. Winds are forecast to drop in the Bay of Biscay...see this Earth Wind Map link and use shift+k to advance by 24h (shift+j to reverse that and without the shift k & j shift by 3h only).
Some interesting weather routing to be tackled by the competitors ...
Definitely interesting.
I don't think we'll know the end result until Yannick crosses the line.

Its an incredible finish; I doubt the organisers ever thought the time bonuses would ever be a factor ...
We will know when we wake up; my guess is that the wind will soften over night and Dalin will just scrape the win ...
Kinda hope the first over the line wins but those who went to help others deserve the bonus ... maybe two winners could be declared (or three)
Incredibly close finish. You wouldn't think it was possible after twenty-odd thousand miles of sailing!

Apparently Boris just hit a fishing boat! What a dramatic final phase

I'm afraid so...link:
At 1950hrs UTC this evening while racing in third place, some 90 miles from the Vendée Globe finish line off Les Sables d’Olonne German skipper Boris Herrmann (Seaexplorer-Yacht Club de Monaco) was in collision with a fishing boat. He reports damage to his starboard foil and some other damage but he is unharmed and has secured the boat and is proceeding towards the finish line at reduced speed.
Updates deleted...I'm not sure if I misread the data or if the feed hadn't caught up at the time I posted. In any case it looks as though the damage has slowed him to less than half his previous speed.

Well, that’s it concerning the top 10 ranking.
Great race, huge emotions and incredible human strength followed during last 80+ days of lockdown.
8 boats within 24 hours. That’s just less than 1,25% difference between them after 80 days. Incredible

There are still plenty more yet to finish. Pip Hare among them...link.
Charal close to the finish now. Pretty impressive having to go back and fix the boat, starting again a week later, and now coming in 13th.

After his collision and slipping down the finishing order, this may be some consolation for Boris Herrmann...IMOCA Globe Series 2018-2021 champion:
With the arrival of Jérémie Beyou this weekend in Les Sables d'Olonne, the IMOCA Class can now confirm the winner and the top-10 of the 2018-21 IMOCA Globe Series Championship.
The German skipper Boris Herrmann, who finished in fifth place in the Vendée Globe on Seaexplorer-Yacht Club de Monaco, is the new IMOCA Globe Series champion, after a remarkably consistent campaign by his Team Malizia over the last three years.
The championship is calculated by accumulating the scores of skippers and their teams in the major IMOCA Class races, among them the Vendée Globe, the Route du Rhum, the Transat Jacques Vabre, the Bermudes 1000 and the Vendée Arctique...
