Through inheritance, I now have a second 2014 ceramic Tower poppy.
I would like to sell one on SC. Given the sensitivity of what it commemorates, I’m looking for thoughts on an appropriate way to sell.
Of course I don’t want to profit personally and will donate all to the Poppy Appeal.
I guess options are:
1. A simple sale, priced at its original cost. First come first served.
2. For sale at the original price and if more than one person interested, pick out of a hat.
3. As 1 and 2 above, at a higher price to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal which is struggling this year.
4. An auction, highest price at given time and day.
5. Don’t sell, not appropriate.

Not only is this not ‘the wrong thing to do’, it’s actually an amazing gesture to give the proceeds to the charity, which has no doubt seen a drop in income in these difficult times.
There couldn’t be a more appropriate way to pass the poppy on.
It should be an open auction too, not sealed bids - as that is likely to secure the best result.

I'm lucky enough to have six of them. One for my wife and I and one each for my five children. They are all still young so they will be getting them when they are old enough to look after them!
Option 4 - maximise the amount to charity

A raffle, say running till the morning of the 11th
I’m sure there’s very many of us who would happily put a fiver (a ticket) to RBL
for a chance to own one of those beautiful Poppies.

Good idea. Having seen the previous charity TZ raffles, this is probably the way to raise the most money.

Agree with raffle. will give everyone a chance of owning. Not everyone can afford what it might go for in an auction and think you'll probably raise more money.

I think that auction or raffle are goods approaches. I didn't consider a raffle originally as I have no experience of fundraiser sites.
Raffles have worked well for Mr Curta and others. K'stepper also raises the sound point of affordability. So I've had a go and set up a Just Giving page and thread in SC. I hope that it works out, please forgive if I muck it up in anyway.

I've gone with the RBL. There are other excellent charities including the range associated with the 2014 event. It's just that the selection and then sharing out is beyond my knowledge and experience, so apologies for this.
Whatever the outcome, raising some money for someone, is better than sitting in a box in a cupboard.

Fairly obviously, raffles work when there is sufficient interest in the cause and/or prize amongst potential participants to realise more for the charity than an auction or straight sale. There have been occasions where raffles for things like bicycles have failed to gain much traction here but it can be difficult to gauge in advance.
I think that you have chosen very well, it is clearly an item loved by many and running this thread has provided an indication of the potential level of support.

I'll add that raffles are also a brilliant way of raising awareness of a good cause and reach a wider audience than auctions or sales. They do come with a much higher administrative overhead though so you need the time available to commit to them.
