Could sparks cause damage to a bonnet like this ?

Hi all has some work done at the house this morning.
I asked the builder if he wanted me to move my car.
He starts cutting metal and I see spark hitting my car bonnet
Could sparks do this ? Or maybe they were there Allready and I hadn’t spotted them ?

The largest one especially looks like the paint has a loose flake so probably happened there.
Does the line of damage point back to source of sparks?

Looks like there is rust under the larger one - suspect this has been dislodged but the rust is the issue.

Doesn’t look like it has anything to do with the sparks to me, looks like there’s rust already under there tbh but it is difficult to see.

However I’d wash the whole car off afterwards as with moisture in the air will soon make those tiny pieces of metal rust all over the car.

Suspect it is an old stone chip that has been badly touched up, water has got in and over time it has rusted.

The damage done to cars using a grinder next to them that I have seen looks different to me. Normally you can feel the metal residue and it looks a little burnt/melted. After a couple of days it will streak rust as it is bare metal. The ones on yours look like Chris has said, old badly touched up stone chips.
    Cheers

    It’s rusty so no.
Check your windows though, hot metal can inbed itself glass very easily.

What Simon said, grinding metal next to a car is not advisable. You can get something to draw out metal contamination, Iron-X I think. A lot of pro detailers use it when decontaminating cars.

I trained as a mechanic / panel beater and it was good practice to always protect paint work, glass and interiors with welding blankets to avoid damage.

As per other comments, the big chip is old as it has well established rust underneath

Usually can’t see sparks on a bonnet as the melt into the paint but if you rub your hand over it will feel very rough like sand paper

That's what I think it looks like.
Definitely look's like old stone chips touched up.

Grinder sparks will melt into the paint when hot and corrode in a day or two,however- if your car was in the line of the rooster tail there would be hundreds of them peppering the area and it doesn’t look like it from the photo.

Regardless of whether the sparks have caused that damage, anyone spraying fine pieces of molten metal onto a car needs the grinder taken away from them.

    Ditto.

Rusty specks all over my porch window.

    Luckily I moved.
    Cheers,
    Neil.
