DVLA V5 postal process experiences ?

I bought a car 12 weeks ago, the previous owner posted the notification and I’m still waiting. I’ve spoken to friends who are still waiting from purchases in June and July.

What are people’s experiences in current times with getting their V5?

I know the online system is quick but I’m not interested in that, what turn around times are people experiencing with the postal system

I can’t speak to the V5, but I sold a motorbike in late March and only got the road tax refund last week so it’s not looking good

I bought a two year old VW t6 in August and it was only last week the v5 arrived. My wife bought a new Ecosport the same week in August and her v5 arrived in a few days. Luck of the draw?

Touch wood DVLA have been good, we have had new v5 documents for the new cars within a couple of weeks of purchase. Even the new ones for number plates changes have been quick. The private plate paperwork that’s a different story.

I have purchased three motorbikes in the last 6 months.
Change of owner done on line.
All three V5’s arrived in well under a week.
Tax disc refund within two weeks.

Ended up taking a private plate of a car and putting it back on (car viewed “online”’and rejected when I went to pick it up) then put plate back on and took off again a week later as I found the right car. Each time I did this online the new v5 came in less than a week.

Did the online transfer bit with the seller for my Subaru on a Sat, got the V5 on the following Wed.

My BMW went on Mon, got the confirmation in the post today.

All the above done online, which I think is key. I suspect anything that requires manual processing will be more lengthy.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there.
I saw a photo online of the empty carpark at the dvla, the story was to do with local cafes etc suffering due to no dvla staff popping in. So a posted form could sit in the dvla for ages before it gets processed, whereas online it goes straight to someone working from home.

Not the same but I transferred a plate onto my wife’s car around 2-3 weeks ago and the updated V5 came through in around 5 days but I did do everything online.

Bought the MX5 & the seller insisted on using the postal method. Took about 8 weeks to get the V5.

Did the plate switch online. Updated V5 in about a week.

Waited about a month for the V5 for my Golf back in June/July.

One thing - If you ever tax a car and then cancel the tax shortly (a week or so) later, the DVLA will claim you never taxed it!

For various reasons, this happened to me on two cars one year and it was only because I'd screenshotted the confirmation that I got them to agree it had happened, so beware!

We moved house and changed 3 vehicles address on V5 by post - Land Rover had a new engine fitted so changed engine number. They came back within a week or so but the engine change one took a little longer.
I was very pleased because I was expecting them to ask for evidence relating to the engine swap.

Bought a Motorhome in July and it took over 6 weeks to get the V5 back, apparently they were running 4 weeks behind.

I got my tax refund back within a week and my V5 for my new bike in just over a week.

I was then able to give the previous owner his treasured number plate back on line in minutes.

I maybe lucky but it has been very efficient for me.

My wife bought a Mini Cooper S from a main dealer, two weeks ago today.

The V5 arrived on the Friday morning - two working days plus postal time.

We had to transfer her cherished plate by post, due to an issue with the previous vehicle.

Posted last Monday, both revised V5 arrived on Saturday morning - 3 working days !

most likely wont see anything so i will worry about it when i have some free time to sort or just never sell the car. Which ever is easiest.
