    NASA in “exciting moon announcement”

Probably not an Omega limited edition, and probably not alien life forms, but it’s certainly got me intrigued ....

The stream is at 4pm UK time and the link is in the article

Water on the moon apparently. Mysterons don't surf.

So that's where the rich folk will move to when they've wrecked the Earth.

“ Speaking during a virtual teleconference, co-author Casey Honniball, postdoctoral fellow at Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, said: "The amount of water is roughly equivalent to a 12-ounce bottle of water in a cubic metre of lunar soil."

NASA, one of the most technologically advanced engineering organisations and still uses units like ‘12 ounce bottle of water’. I have absolutely no concept of how much that is. A litre, 500 mls ? They might as well say 12 freedoms per cubic eagles.

It's the US system of measurement. Why would they use metric measures? They aren't in Europe. (or the EU!)

Yes, but only because that's what the audience understands. Or the American part of it anyway. I have no idea either.

Just Googled it though. A bit more than a San Miguel bottle.

Can’t be just me that thinks that’s a *lot* of water? What’s the catch? Presumably it’s in some chemical form that makes it not really like ‘water’ as we know it? Individual H2O molecules spread evenly within the dust, rather than frozen pools of water?

I reminded of the old adage that man made it to the moon in imperial measures; the concentration camps were built in metric.

Never heard that (slightly disconcerting) adage. What does it mean / imply, do you think? It was Nazi knowledge and engineering that took NASA there.

I read somewhere that some space kit at some point was messed up as part of the team built their half in imperial and the other team built their half in metric... and they didn’t fit together, costing $$$

Also, unrelated imperial/metric units anecdote; I was once stopped for speeding in America, and told the police officer that I was very sorry but I got confused between the kph we use in the UK and their mph... and it worked, he let me off :-)

I guess the difference is that the Americans pointed that knowledge and engineering at the moon, whereas the Germans pointed theirs ... well, we all know where they pointed theirs.

The US started their manned flight programme using a converted US Army Redstone ballistic missile. I wonder where those had been pointed...along with the Atlas, Jupiter, Thor, Titan, Juno etc rockets they had developed?

At the USSR most likely, who were pointing theirs at the USA.

That was the shape of the mirror on the Hubble Space telescope. Oops.

That was the shape of the mirror on the Hubble Space telescope. They sent it into orbit before realising it didn’t work. Oops.

Since they collected samples of the moons surface and analysed them both on the moon and back on earth, how come there was no trace in the samples?

Because they probably took samples from the wrong place.

If two alien species took samples, one from the Sahara and the other from the Antarctic, they’d have very different assumptions of the amount of water on this planet!

Maybe so, I just find it strange that they can find out more from just looking at it than actually going there.

Try flying a plane - altitude in feet, speed in knots, visibility in metres, air pressure in hectopascals (or millibars). At least they've done away with cloud cover in octas (eigths) and now it's just scattered, broken or overcast.

The old adage conveniently forgets that the first concentration camps were built in Imperial measures.
