I've been struggling with the concept but if I had to choose one from my current collection, nowithstanding recent acquisitions I'd choose this as it has easy change strap / bracelet effectively giving it multiple looks:
And the movement is rather nice too with the case and movement being Geneva seal stamped.

Like others on here, I’ll go for the humble Submariner. The Submariner is the watch that keeps on giving with so many different models over the years and people have their own particular favourites, be it a Red Sub, a 5 digit, 6 digit, Kermit, Ceramic, diamonds and PM etc,
My particular choice is the 5512, a watch that has been out of production since 1978, this one has a Mark 3 Maxi Dial known as the lollipop dial from the final days.
Light, comfortable, a watch with history that is fairly scarce in the UK.

Rolex Explorer 21470 (39mm, lumed numerals) is as close to perfect I've found.
Probably not wrong there. A 5512/3, a 16600, or even a 1665 are right up there as the best of the best IMO.
Thank you. I would agree with that. My other Rolex is a 16600. I waited until I found a really nice full set tritium model with the drilled lugs.
Would love a 1665, but a bit out of budget. I was thinking a nice tritium 5 digit GMT might make for a nice trio at some point in the future.

Got to be the 116600 SD4K for me. Robust, legible, relatively uncommon, goes with anything.

Never tried a 4/5 digit GMT but really don’t think the 16600 can be beaten if you have the wrists for it. Looked silly on me but I’d be tempted to give it another go if prices really do hit the floor.
It all depends on what the individual wants, if it’s the latest bracelet with adjustment type clasps etc or bright lume or no worries about going in water etc then clearly Vintage wouldn’t work for them. Personally, I like the older bracelets, they can be very comfortable. Each to their own or in an ideal world own both then you have a choice.
For me the Zeno Diver is a great shout, relatively uncommon in the wild, incredibly comfortable, great looking, practice and £160 from our Eddie a couple of decades ago!
I don’t think prices are likely to hit the floor. Despite what some are asking on Chrono24 and the likes the 16600 range at present is approx £8k to £9.5k with later loose watches at the lower end and earlier full sets a little dearer. There really is no need to pay £10k at present for one of these.
The GMT would be even smaller on you, much like 4/5 digit Sub. Slimmer cases etc, the SD has to accommodate the HEV.
Not perfect, but it's not too far off.
