At least it’s out of the way now and you can relax and stop worrying about it getting dinked. That’s how I rationalise my new car scratch, the motorbike dropping, etc etc

Well at least it was somewhat doing something useful. I did pretty much the exact same - taking out the bins and hit the corner of the wall... was Not impressed

That is just such bad luck. Chances are if you were wearing a Timex, nothing would have happened to it. As per previous comment, get it repaired or else just accept it and put it behind you. No matter how bad things appear to be, they could always be worse.

Argh, never fun to feel a watch clatter against something for the first time, but it was always going to happen.

I think that first scrape or ding in anything sticks out, don’t worry, it’ll soon just be part of a collection of swirls, marks and dents life throws at things and at least the early marks won’t stand out so much!

I do feel like new watches seem to take a little bit of time to get used to the profile or position on the wrist, and getting a bit too close to hard surfaces are too easy to do.

Granite worktop edge would do the job......metal sink wouldn't cause such a dink (ouch!)....That's the reason I take my watches of doing house jobs..

It could have been much worse! I remember someone posting picture of their GS snowflake here after a similar event and it did not look pretty (bezel, crystal f’d)! You’re quite lucky then I guess :-) have a lovely day!

    Ffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuu

Ha ha - yeh. I always wear my watches, never baby them.
It was just quite a ding for the first one, right on the lug edge and in my eyeline all the time now.

Hey-ho. Looks like I have a new beater...

Just have it laser welded when it gets serviced. Look at it as a temporary affliction, like a spot

When I had my Sub/hulk etc this is what I worried about constantly, made me realise that I was punching above my weight in watch value :)

If it makes you feel any better, I have a near identical mark in the same place on one of my lugs. Happened in equally unglamorous circumstances which made it all the more annoying. Watch was 3yrs old at the time, not 3 days, so I feel your pain, but it fades because these things are meant to be worn, and damage is almost unavoidable.

Sympathetic polishing at service, or laser-welding depending how you feel years down the line are both options.

I think that would be annoying on any new watch, whatever the cost / value.

That's a bad spot to damage a watch, that can`t be fixed without removing metal and thinning the lug which wouldn't be acceptable on something like this. Laser welding would fix this but it won`t be cheap.

The problem with many watches is the size, they sit high above the wrist and they take more knocks. The shape/profile of Rolex lugs doesn`t help, the edges are always prone to getting damaged. Smaller slim watches generally pick up less damage but they're not immune.

I always take a watch of when doing practical stuff, but loading a dishwasher wouldn't prompt me to do so, it's the daft stuff like this that catches you out no matter how careful you try to be.

Sorry to see this. I'm 34 years into my 16750 without dinging it so far; perhaps I've been lucky.

Yeh, my thoughts too - not a good location.

It will have to be lived with, as would not want the lug thinned down.

I know nowt about laser welding. It’s one for the future perhaps. No dramas for now - it will not be the only mark!

    I agree

I think I meant that I realised I was never bonding with the more expensive watches as I knew I was just looking after them, keeping them prestine for the new owner.

A £500 watch for me is one that I dont ever think about resale value

If only I'd paid more attention at school :)

    Wear and tear!

This one still ran. All functions worked and it kept perfect time! Watches should be removed before welding or grinding!

I dropped a brand new Rolex CHNR (Rootbeer) on my tiled floor when adjusting the bracelet a couple of years ago
Big ding on the side and creased the bottom of the side too
Only guy that would touch it was Rocco who brought it back good as new with laser welding
Rolex won’t laser weld unfortunately (as far as I am aware anyhow).

Gutted for you but it will probably "hurt" less in a week or and that's what I've found.

It's one of the reasons I prefer buying second hand regardless of if the watch cost hundreds or thousands. If it arrives with the odd light mark or blemish I'm far more likely to wear and enjoy it. When I buy new the watch is babied beyond belief and sometimes only worn around the house before being returned safely to the watch box.
Absolute madness I know but nothing about this hobby/obsession really makes sense.

    Cheers
    Neil

That's a mega-ding!!!! How did you manage that? Did you attack it with a chisel? I've never managed to achieve anything like that, and I'm definitely in the wear-it-whatever school of watch care!

    I'm exactly the same Neil.

I’ve had 3 new watches this year and all remain unworn in the boxes, well 2 actually as I traded one of them for some ropey old watches that I will wear. The other 2 (Tudors) just sit gathering dust although they are wound regularly so the interaction with them is nice.
