How High Is Your Dining Table?

In another bid for the forum's most boring thread...
    • How high (in cm preferably) is your dining table?
    • How high (in cm preferably) are your dining chairs?

I'm sat here eating my lunch and feel I could just lean forward and slurp up my soup without the need of a spoon. I think our dining table is on the high side of normal and our chairs are on the low side. When we bought them (separately) it never occurred to us that they could be anything other than the right height.

If you want it to be more boring (useful), you need to consider the distance from floor to top of table top (75cm) AND floor to underside of table top's supporting beam if present (65cm) as that is what greatly impacts whether your legs fit under it properly.

Chairs are challenging as they're seldom flat on the seat top's surface. Where your behind goes on ours is 43cm, whilst the seat front is 45cm.

    My kind of thread

Table is 76.5cm and chairs are 47cm, purchased as a set. Re the plastic, wife insists on it.

    75cm high table

    45cm seat height of chairs

The above is the industry SOP normally

Obviously there is some room for slight variation.

Dining table (floor to surface height): 750mm

Chair (floor to seat height when padding is compressed) : 450mm

    Hope that helps.

Ive got a glass table that was meant to be toughened glass and scratch resistant. I’ve ended up with scratches on it. A layer of plastic or film is probably a good idea.

Is there enough room for guests to use your glass table in comfort?

That clear plastic cover is starting to make me queasy. And why is there obfuscation on the glass itself - that's just weird.
    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

You seem to be very good at making unpleasant comments. What the man puts on his table has nothing to do with you and the "that's just weird" comment is uncalled for.

Please be more select with your unpleasant comments.

    Yes, that is unusual.

Velorum of this parish may know.

My best guess would be consult the archives of WG. Episode XV is helpful - Aunt Sally Performs At The Local Repertory

Or indeed any of us. Perish the thought. This is a serious subject. I would not want to subvert anyone's expectations in any way.

Moving swiftly on, I've measured my table and it is 75cm. Very accessible. Although I haven't taken into account the depth of carpet which may cause a slight misreading.

Table: a 50s CH327 table by Hans Wegner. According to the drawings (they are online): 72cm high.
Chairs: Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen. Chairs are from the early/mid 80s: 46cm at the lowest point of the seat (the multiplex seat is concaved).

I'm 6 ft tall and I have no problem sitting behind that table. We used to have a Fritz Hansen Super-ellips table with the same hight. I wouldn't be surprised that 72cm was the going table hight in Denmark during the second half of the 20th Century.

In both cases: the age of the furniture can be important. Big manufacturers are known to alter the dimensions due to the fact that people are taller than 50 yrs ago.

The plastic is an interesting idea. I think I would go with a nice table cloth. Maybe pair it with those hardboard place mats my gran has with pictures of stately homes on, Maybe even a doily or two.
I am hoping I get the place mats and the tea cosy in the will when she kicks the bucket.
I can confirm my table and chairs conform with the accepted standards in terms of heights.
    Table 750mm
    Chair 450mm

I think the reality is glass scratches so isn't the best material for a table top no matter how it looks. Wouldn't buy one again.

Yes, I'm sure I 'knew' when I was a kid that the only thing that could scratch glass was a diamond. If that's true, my wife and kids have more diamonds than I know about.

As above so you don’t get caught playing adult footsie with somebody you shouldn’t be.

Interestingly the chairs from the same period are 45cm. So perhaps they just had small thighs...

Indeed. A glass dining table's too high for proper use, you'd need steps to get on and off it.

Sadly -but my excuse is that the dining table has been in the family for well over 100 years, I measured it and 74.5cm. The Ercol wooden chairs(certainly in excess of 50 years) are 41, but with the cushions we have on them 45.

There's nothing sad about measuring the height of your dining room table. Definitely not.

I owned a furniture company for years until recently and we were
    mainly commercial rather than domestic.

Although there is variation the standard seat height is deemed as 460mm and I would agree this is the norm from experience. Table height is generally circa 760mm. I do think the heights have increased over time and there is no formal specification or BS standard for dining but there is for schools which is 460/760mm for larger children/adults.

That said I have known chairs with seats as high as 500mm on occasions.
It is assumed the gap between the seat and table surface is 250-300mm

So all in all it’s clear as mud. As the OP said the forums most boring thread and the one I seem to know most about 😀.

I know people will want to know...
We have replaced the chairs. The new ones have a seat height of 46cm and feel much better suited to the table height. I did quip to Mrs MCH about the difference a couple of inches could make and got the expected response.

Phew! Thank goodness you've got that sorted. We were all on the edge of our (460mm) seats.

    Sorry..

Ours are that too, I’m happy but the wife reckons the chairs are too low, I suggested the her upper body height had compressed over the years into width! Currently in A&E waiting to have my foot removed from my mouth.
