What do you think is wrong with these shoes?

Below is a picture of my favourite shoes - a pair of brown loaks

I've had them for about 3 years- I cant recall when exactly buy probably in the first year the patches of discolouration that you can see (more obvious on the right one) appeared.

Giving them a good polish with Kiwi makes very little difference. I have kind of ignored them for a long time but as time goes on they are irrigating me more and more.

Any ideas as to what has caused this - and more importantly can it be fixed?

    Thanks!

Can't help with the fixing other than keep polishing, but it looks like you're tucking them into the wheels on your office chair. Don't do that.

Strip the toe with saddle soap, treat with cream polish and then wax.
Kiwi wax won't do anything to help that.

Yes, if the issue is wider spread then the whole shoe needs it.
Most cobblers can do this quickly.
In future ensure you get creme polish and use that monthly rather than just wax - wax bassicly just sits on top, and doesn't nourish the leather, leaving it vulnerable to the dies washing out.
The creme strips the wax, penetrates into the leather and then a coat of wax seals them.

This sort of thing before wax:

If you know an ex-Guardsman perhaps you could get them beeswaxed?

Some useful info here - I’ve had the same happen with a pair of boots - will give the recommendations a try....

Thank you to those sharing the knowledge.

Looks like the top surface which is dyed has been worn off revealing the natural colour of the leather underneath.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

Does the underside of your coffee table have any sharp edges that could be causing this Ian? Perhaps lie on your back and slide under it for a look to investigate?

    Close enough.

I'd guess the shoes are made from a veg tanned top grain, with the corrected layer and finish worn away to reveal the dyed leather.

Wow, I was going to post the same video.

I’m a bit of a shoe snob and love The Elegant Oxford, what he does is amazing.

Personally I love nothing better than dressing my shoes to look as good as possible and am quite happy sat polishing my shoes, even if they dont need doing.

Which had important implications for correcting the issue. The corrected layer is a bit like paint rather than leather, so this is why it's difficult to match with polishes.

It's worth paying the extra for full grain.

    I never use wax polish..
Saphir products. Cotton cloths and good brushes are all you need. Rotate your shoes, never wear a pair two days in a row keep them clean and use shoe trees.

I enjoy it too, especially getting the toe polished like that. Hate it when I scuff one on a kerb or similar.

Annoyingly I’ve got 3 pairs of shoes in my locker at work that I cannot retrieve. Offset somewhat by a few pairs I’ve polished but not yet worn.

Another fan of sapphir products here, makes such a difference, but like any hint gets expensive lol

    I did these this week.

Standard black penny loafer, but dressed up with blue cream and polish. Gives a very interesting finish, they look black but if you look closer they have a very very subtle blue hue to them.

a little more work and they will be done

    Cheers,

    Ben

PC, do you know what model they are? If you do you can probably confirm if they're corrected leather or full grain and that will give you a better idea if they can be refurbished easily with polish or not.

I recently discovered that Cheaney offer a free polishing service in any of their shops, so I've taken full advantage of this. Maybe Loake do the same?
