    The Social Dilemma on Netflix

Anyone watched this, quite a powerful documentary.

Frightening stats on the impact of social media on kids.

Very interesting, helps explain why people have such strong views on subjects

Was quite interesting/alarming how it’s causing polarisation of certain views.

Telling how the experts all pretty much barred their kids from using social media.

It was a great watch and very alarming at the same time. I can easily see how social media effectively picks up on the slightest tendency and amplifies it - thus training and encouraging a more extreme point of view.

I’m not really one for social media myself but I have removed myself from FB and Instagram, Reddit and Twitter as a result. If only I could get my parents to do the same:

Not wanting to make this political but I’ve seen how my parents, two normally lucid people have suddenly become incredibly right wing, xenophobic and intolerant in their late 70s after spending more and more time on Facebook with nothing else to do but read, post and reshare. It started off with the original brexit stuff a couple of years back. The rubbish posted and reshared by them got worse and worse until I blocked them. I’m amazed they still have any real world friends.

I’m going to sit down with them this weekend and watch the documentary with them. Should be an eye opener (I hope).

TLDR: I’ve seen real world proof of the behaviours and outcomes the documentary is alleging and it’s not just kids sucked into it.

The impact on children and the alarming rates of self harm and suicides since Facebook hit photos was shocking.

I really enjoyed it and watched it with my 11 year old daughter after a mate recommended it. Personally it just reaffirmed what I knew and I continue to use social media in my limited manner but my daughter was shacked and it is very informative for that age group who are the target audience for social media and it’s manipulation.

It’s the most grown up programme I have watched with her and she took a lot from it.

What was surprising from the Facebook guys was the acceptance and acknowledgment of the unintended consequences of some of the features such as the like button.

Yes, a real eye opener regarding the extremes and capabilities they have. I noticed that my feeds are targeted and polarised ages ago and that helps me seek out other sources to balance my viewpoint somewhat, but the problem will be for certain demographics who are less aware. Will be watching this again with my teens.

Thats the one that stood out for me, great idea at the start but the realisation now of the problems it is creating is eye-opening...

I also did the same, had old accounts of Facebook, twitter and instagram which tbh were never used but I've now applied for them all to be closed, think it takes 28 days to do but that won't be a problem...

Sounds like it might be worth sitting down & watching this with my kids.
