Damn. In his youth in the late 70s, he was untouchable imho. Really took the guitar to another level. RIP.

Changed it all in one go. Amps, gtrs, effects, technique. Untouchable for a few yrs with everyone trying to catch up. Guys like Vai built on his foundations. Saw the VH debut tour. Just full on and supporting a tired black sabbath. Sammy Hagar joining really lifted them but sadly alcohol took its toll on EVH. But for yrs he was up there with Satriani and Via and then Slash stepped up and took some of the spotlight. But Eddie you rocked and the industry and gtr players salute you.

    Really sad news.

He really was something. An innovator and one hell of a player. Such a big part of the soundtrack to my life.

    Thanks for the fantastic memories!

Just saw this, I'm stunned. Only 65 and had a long fight against throat cancer. RIP Eddie.

The most influential and probably talented guitarist of my time, I love rock, metal so I might be biased but this is truly a very very sad day..

    Play well Eddie..

    The GOAT.

    Those first 6 albums!

Glad I got to see him a few times.

OMG, I am in shock. VH were my favourite band growing up and "JUMP" is a song I can listen to over and over again without getting fed up. It and "Living on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi are my links to the greatest decade in humanity's history, the 80s. That's really sad. He had his problems with alcohol etc, but wasn't expecting this. RIP Eddie play "Eruption" on your way to the pearly gates.

Loved Van Halen when I was a teenager. I use to play 1984 over and over again on my Walkman while I was doing my paper round. Always remember my dad bringing it home from work so I could “tape” it. You wouldn’t get away with the album cover now.

I shall listen to it on the way to work tomorrow. Thanks for the memories. RIP.

Agree, Panama has great riffs and an amazing tone that Eddie worked so hard to create, I think he used to play with guitar pots and pick ups to get the perfect tone..

Shocked and sad, the soundtrack to many of us. Far too young, but he left a hell of a legacy. RIP.

Back in school, mate of mine came in carrying the debut album. Have you heard this? he said and lent it me. Now supposedly gtrs were out, it was synth, Gary Nyman etc but you dropped the needle on You Really Got Me or Ain't Talking about love and it was stunning.

Gutting. Like Hendrix before him, he changed the art of the electric guitar.

Very sad. Like for many others, he had a massive influence on my music. :(

He'd been ill for a long time, but it's still a huge shock and terribly sad. I'm another big Panama fan.

    RIP Eddie Van Halen

First heard Van Halen in the Chelsea Drug Store in the Kings Road in 1978, Running with the devil. I had to ask the DJ who they were?
I then saw them at The Rainbow later that year, when they were supporting Black Sabbath. Sabbath pulled out of the tour, they could not live with Van Halen.
Eddie stood with his back to the audience so no one could see how he was making that incredible sound.
What an amazing innovator, incredible player up there with the very best guitarists.

Thanks for the music Eddie RIP

I always thought it was Hendrix that
would have been his greatest influence but strangely it was old Slow Hand and Jimmy Page as well as to a lesser extent Hendrix.

it was but he just took it so much further. When that 1st album came out every guitarist famous or not had to stop and re-evaluate. remember people like Gary Moore saying it was a game changer for him. All those who followed like Rhoads, Sambora and other 80s players had to get their tapping, harmonics and shredding down. There was the single pickup super strat that launched a generation of superstrats. Amps? He had a selection that Paul Rivera worked on.

But what's this? Slash on EVH and a Hulk (approx 1.24). guitar players and a Rolex https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDnv3FXeOKM

I will say that I believe Randy Rhoads would have been up there with Eddie had he not died in that terrible plane crash..
