Thread: Time machine

    Time machine

Let's say you had a time machine but it only went back twenty years.

Which watch would you go back in time to buy? Your budget was a very firm £20k, no trades. And you were buying from an AD and had access to anything you wanted. You could only buy one watch and the AD did not do discounts.

    Which would it be?

That’s an easy one. ‘Simplicity’ one might say. Gutted that I so nearly did but talked myself out of it. :-(

How much were Mil Subs 20 years ago?

This is limited to watches from an AD

Mil subs, omani gifts etc don't apply

Omega Railmaster 36mm and use the change to buy an Alfa GTV. Not an investment, but I would have been very happy at the time. Or rather my current self, would tell my former self: enjoy!

£20k worth of Zenith Daytonas - 3 possibly, two whites and a black.

Difficult as I can think of relatively few watches in the last 20 years that are no longer available and / or far more expensive (other than the usual Rolex sports models).

I would probably make do with a Speedmaster Mitsukoshi from 2003. A very humble watch given the budget but I would struggle to beat a JDM, panda speedie which was truly limited at 300 pieces.

Makes me feel old when I initially though 20-years was a long time ago then realised it was “only” 2000!

I’m assuming that makes watches like the Comex not available to buy as you wouldn’t be able to pick them up in an AD in 2000?

Problem is, I’m not massively educated about super expensive watches these days, so I’d probably have to go and buy 10 sports models like SeaDwellers or GMT-Master II watches and then sell them when I got back to 2020. By all means call me out for being a profiteer!

Can’t even buy a Snoopy Speedmaster because it wasn’t out in 2000.

I’d probably pick up a three-hander 90s Dynamic whilst I was there for my own use. Transporting it back to 2020 in the time machine would also mean it’s pencil tin wouldn’t have rotted away.

Pre-Vendome Panerais, I think. in 2000, you should have been about to pick 10 up for your £20k, I think!

The rules are one watch only

You don't have to play by the rules, of course.

Personally, I'd have bought an omega snoopy.

Serves me right for speed reading!

Would George Daniels have sold you a watch for £20k back then?

Aren’t you 3 years too early in the year 2000?

    What’s the objective?

Make as much money as possible (the primary drive for many watch purchasers these days)

    Or

Buy a much loved but discontinued watch (possibly for <<£20k).

For me, it’s definitely the latter and I’d choose a couple of now discontinued Breitlings - (relatively) inexpensive, they’d all lose value but boy those are real watches!

I understood that he meant up to 20 years.

If it had to be from exactly 20 years ago I don’t think I’d bother!

Yep, you can go upto twenty years back.

Your objectives might be to maximise return (I'd be buying apple or Amazon or bitcoin of whatever to meet that objective) or might just be to buy a watch you couldn't at the time because you didn't know about it, it was out of your league, it was not available. But now's your chance!

I've obviously read this too literally, gone back too far and missed out on the Snoopy. I should have read this as "only went back a maximum of twenty years". Damn.

I’d go with White Daytona - sold mine few years ago and regretted it since!
