Favourite songs, what do you listen to over and over again and never tire of?

I listen to and watch these two recordings regularly and never tire of them. Every note seems to just float perfectly. I rate Gilmour as one of the best guitarists of all time. Although the electric versions are brilliant, the sounds he can get from an acoustic guitar are just sublime in my opinion.

Which recordings do you keep returning to?

Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

    Simon and Garfunkel, America.

And Wish You Were Here, as above.

I quite like this version as well. It's virtually a capella.

Kate and Anna McGarrigle, “Talk to me of Mendocino”. It’s a song I’ve known from childhood (my mum had significantly folkie tendencies) and It still packs a monster punch. It’s simple, it’s beautiful, and I could listen to it all day. The video is a bit cheesy, a fan-made montage in tribute to Kate after she died a few years back, but the music is the point.

    https://youtu.be/V7KsDv1K8-k

And then, there’s everybody’s favourite slab-faced, ex-smackhead Aussie songwriter (well, mine, anyway): Nick Cave, with “Papa Won’t Leave You, Henry”. Specifically the version from “Live Seeds”, which captures a little of the Bad Seeds’ monstrous stage presence. Very much a product of its time, and arguably its writer’s preoccupation with religion, arcane imagery and recreational pharmaceuticals, I enjoy the gothic imagery, the weirdness, and the sharp and terrible power of the lyric.

    https://youtu.be/leUVFRqn-Zg

And I’m going to have to stop now because otherwise this will turn into “Preacher’s Top 200 Songs Ever”...

A fairly eclectic mix for me. In no particular order-

Phantom of the Opera - Iron Maiden
Is this the life - Cardiacs
Uncertain Smile - The The. Jools Holland’s solo is epic
Down to the River - Alison Krauss
    Paranoid Android - Radiohead
Gin and Juice - Snoop ( my guilty pleasure!)
    Disgraceful - Dubstar
    High Hopes - Pink Floyd
    Salva Mia - Faithless
Won’t get fooled again - The Who
    Unintended - Muse
    Barcelona - Freddy M and Montserrat C

That lot on loop would keep me going for hours.

    Chicane - Offshore
    Sneaker Pimps - Six Underground
Zero 7 - Give It Away

Songs I must have listened to thousands of times. Never get sick of them.

Christ alive there's some weird middle of the road stuff there........grin!

    Totally agree with the following two though;

    Small Faces - Tin Soldier

    Jackson 5 - I want you back

    But for me there is one song that just always makes me smile/dance........you must be dead if you don't at least tap along to this;

I have been known to have "The Wall" on a loop, but to be fair WYWH (the album) is also in the top five.

Leonard Cohen can easily be played all day, too. Tom T Hall.

Singles is this at the moment, because of a stupid advert for a game. I find it so much more powerful than the original:

And classic is the 1981 version of this album

'Against stupidity, the gods themselves struggle in vain' - Schiller.

Some interesting choices listed, and some are worth an investigation.
For me Thunder Road has to be my favourite song of all time so that would top my list.
Film Noir by the Gaslight Anthem is another favourite, I probably listen to their album 59 sound one a month or so.
Head by Lydia Loveless is another regularly reoccurring tune on my play list.

I have many but the two things I have listened too most are Hergest Ridge and Ommadawn by Mike Oldfield. Those two pieces are therapy, peace and, in a way, a drug to me.

I listen to Everything But The Girl a lot.

Things like Missing, Hatfield 1980, Walking Wounded, Troubled Mind, We Walk The Same Line and Driving are all candidates (as are many others), but the one that I think I could tolerate for longest is "Twin Cities"

I like the sentiment and Tracie Thorn's voice is at its languid best.

Great call. “Old Friends” is also worth a mention.

I’ve only started listening to Art of Noise this year. Love their take on the Robinson Crusoe tv series theme.
