    While My Guitar Gently Weeps

I've been planning to post this for a while, but never got around to it. Prompted by Alpha4's excellent post, I was inspired to actually get around to it. I thought it would be more polite to start my own thread rather than hijack his.

Having enjoyed the live version featuring Prince very much, I noticed that there are quite a few versions of the song on YouTube. Here are some of the notable ones:

    The Beatles (for reference):

    George Harrison and Gary Moore:

George Harrison and Eric Clapton (plus an array of 80's stars inc. Ringo and Jeff Lynne):

For me the version on the concert for George DVD is the standout version. Only Eric Clapton seems to be able to do justice to the solo (for obvious reasons) and on this version he absolutely nailed it, even though he used a Strat, whereas the original was recorded using a Les Paul.

My favourite Beatles song and among my all time favourite songs... thank you for posting! I shall be watching every one of these.

I do have to say that the version with the Prince solo is truly wonderful.

[edit - I could watch Jeff Healey all day]

Nothing gets near the original on the "White Album". However, there are many great covers, and this is my favourite, his playing's just so fluid . . .

Fabulous, absolutely fabulous. I've never seen the Gary Moore video before.
I saw George live in 1986 at the NEC, he was introduced unexpectedly at the end of the concert and played Johnny B. Goode, I couldn't believe it, that and Queen in Wembley the same year are my best musical memories.

Thanks for starting this thread. There are some superb interpretations there.

For me, the version with Prince is a reminder of what a fabulous guitarist he was.

Also Yngwie J Malmsteem’s is another standout IMHO.

Dhani has a beaming smile, but I am not sure that Tom Petty was that amused. He is comparatively so... pedestrian.

    He's on rhythm guitar....

You actually see Prince exchanging glances at Tom so that they loop one more time at the end.

I didn't mean the actual playing, I know he could play. I mean he's been playing and singing for a few minutes when Prince starts, and he hasn't given an outstanding performance, just a singalong. So I was referring to the contrast but yes, I know, they were in their role. That said, Prince's wink to Tom could also be interpreted as a challenge :D

Possibly, but it looked pretty conspiratorial to me.

Still not a patch on the original.

^ Exactly!^ Without Prince's solo this version wouldn't have hit 90 million views!

From the other videos: Dave Grohl's job on the drums is outstanding. Is he today's loudest drummer?

Yep, I don't play the guitar (or anything else, really), but I recognise the bloke's dripping with talent -- and in a good, unpretentious way.

    Ey up

Having recently purchased the re-mastered White album (only because all the original copy's I wanted cost Rolex prices) which I am now very glad of.

It is very, very hard to listen to anything else, favourite albums seem flat.

wait a minute while I put it on the deck,it has to be the vinyl for the best effect.

back again I don't just mean this song, the whole album is a sonic master-peace that I am only now able to appreciate fully.

In my youth I would just skip to the obvious standout songs, you have to listen to it as a whole.

For example Good night following revolution 9,Long long long following Helter Skelter(the dirtiest, nastiest punk song ever) is pure genius,Monkey has taken on a new dynamic I just want the song to go on and on.

Songs I dismissed I now love, even ob la di,Ringos drumming blows me away all over the albumn.

One other fact Sid didn't invent the Pogo, watch Hard days night someone dancing with Ringo starts jumping up and down then Ringo joins in,it just didn't have a name then.

Dhani gave an interview a few years back and addressed his smile.

He claimed he was smiling at the thought of how much Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne would be raging at Prince distasteful display.

He didn’t appreciate Prince performance and thought he was trying to steal the limelight.

Hilarious that he smashes his way through it even during the delicate parts. Love him all the same
