I've had a cou0ple of Barbour's and do not rate them!

I have had -plenty of cheap ones and never looked back. Currently have two from Rydale country clothing and they're great, think it was £50 for the pair.

    Thanks for that!

After learning from this thread that I definitely don't want a waxed jacket, I just bought the waxed jacket from Partridge!

The shooting jackets were only available in TZUK sizes (XL & XXL) which is a shame, but the waxed jacket was available in my size, so duly ordered.

    Seems good for £110!

    Thanks :-)

Now, I need to find a nice non waxed jacket per all the advice above!

Nice one, glad to help! My Father in Law swears by John Partridge as a brand and has been wearing their stuff for decades :)

Insulation layer and a goretex pro shell. These are bombproof.

I have some Arcteryx kit and it has some nice design touches but it’s pricey. I recently bought a Mountain Equipment Goretex Pro shell for half the price of my Arcteryx Goretex Pro shell and is pretty close in quality to Arcteryx.

I agree Arcteryx is really good but I don’t believe anymore that it is worth the money. I also rate Montane as being fairly good value.

Looking at this thread with interest. I stupidly put my old jacket in the washing machine and it shrank, several sizes.

I didn't know Belstaff relaxed for free.
Mine is due it's 2nd rewax. It's been 15-20 years since I did it last time.
PS, the wax will rub off onto anything it touches - coats hanging up next to it, your jeans, back packs, car seats and seat belts, etc.

That's never happened with any of our Belstaffs and only one of my Barbours.

Maybe when the wax is very new. Once it’s been worn a few times it doesn’t do that - at least not in my experience. Might also depend on the weight of the fabric and how much wax is on there.

The Border is covered in wax and some has dripped out of the sleeves but the others especially the Belstaffs, nothing

One of my favourite jackets for out and about wandering as you describe is a musto technical tweed it looks quite smart but is waterproof although no hood so a cap is needed in the rain which handily inside there is a big poachers pocket perfect for holding one when not needed

    This one

although I’ve had mine for a couple of years it doesn’t seem to have changed much

That looks great, how's the fit?
Do you have the same size as you usually wear? If so is it roomy or snug?

    Cheers,
    Adam.

When the jacket was new in the mid 1980's - it definitely shed it's wax onto anything and everything.
Bought for £45 at half price from Harry Woods motorbike shop on Westgate Road Newcastle, it was used through most winters riding to work & college, and became a dirt magnet.

It has been in the washing machine recently and needs it's second re-wax after nearly 40-years of on/off use.
Maybe the new Belstaff jackets use better wax.

Sorry mate only just seen this question I’m a 44” chest and have a large which has enough room for a jumper underneath etc without being too baggy I normally buy either a L or XL depending on the item I seem to fall right in between sizes so always a bit of a punt for me. From memory philip Morris are pretty good with returns if it’s the wrong size etc. I own so many coats it’s hard to keep track but this is a firm favourite and worn quite a bit seems the right balance of warm enough but not over heating
