I thought it was OK & I'll watch the rest of the series.

I must have been watching the other Top Gear as well.

I thought that bits of it were utterly hilarious. Real, ‘laugh out loud’ stuff. The most ‘meh’ part of the episode was the SF90 test. But only because it felt that we had been there, done that already (many times).

    it made me sad

most my adult life top gear has been something i enjoyed and looked forward to each series

last night was so bad i took off the series link, i was sad, it was much much sadder

even now you can access some of the old episodes on the various services, even the ones on dave which have been cut to make them more politically correct are better

i do wonder if "northern gear" is due to the bbc moving to manchester

    maybe i'm just getting old

After watching it I thought it was legit funny. Better than I expected. The biggest shock for me was; and I’ll never afford one, but what a bargain the SF90 is, surely Ferrari could get away with charging more than double and they’d sell them. Loved that the main test revolved around cars I might actually buy too. Yes it’s not C,H & M but it was very good entertainment none the less. Harris is still the best by far of the current bunch.

It seemed like they were each out to sound more northern than the others. As a southerner it got very tiresome, I turned it over half way through.

I didn't realise it was back on and I was working nights yesterday
Mrs T. recorded it for me, I watched this afternoon and as above it was an hour well spent for me

I think maybe they sound northern because they are, apart from Chris Harris who isn't. Only a southerner would describe someone as sounding 'northern', like it's some kind of generic accent. I mean, neither Paddy nor Freddie speak properly because they're from Lancashire, but I'd rather listen to them than some of the Essex mob who seem to have taken over elsewhere.

Essex mob? I grew up in Essex and it was strictly Country squires and carrot crunching, not this faux cockney bs which has become the Essex norm. That is not Essex; TOWIE is not Essex, it’s a very sad state of affairs.

    I quite enjoyed.

Aside from being an homage to a previous episode where Hammond and May spent 24h in a smart car its still a great bit of escapism in today’s world of horror.

Thought the Ferrari looked like cack though. Yuck!

I think what this thread has shown is that...

    - Quite a few people liked it and quite a few didn't
    - Quite a few people found it funny and quite a few didn't
    - Quite a few people thought it was a worthwhile way to spend an hour and quite a few didn't
    - Quite a few people felt it was good use of the licence fee and quite a few didn't

There doesn't appear to be a massive majority in either direction.

I think that we need to accept the fact that Top Gear has moved on, and adapted its format to be an entertainment show rather than the purist motoring show it was 2 decades or so ago.

It's a motoring show in the same way that "A League of their Own" is a sports quiz, more tongue in cheek and concentrating on being "mass entertainment" with the occasional serious car segment to appeal to those more seriously interested in car

People that want a pure motoring show have various other more specialist shows on Youtube to give them information on the specific motoring section they are interested in.

At the end of the day its a TV show, watch it and accept it is what it is or if it's not your thing, then don't.

    Sigh.
The BBC makes money on TG, its their biggest earner. It wouldn't matter how they were funded, they would still make and sell this programme.

I quite enjoyed the last series, but I thought this weeks was, at best, patchy.

I'll watch next week's episode in the hope it's better, but I thought the Paddy McGinty's cut price "Who Do You Think You Are?" was a waste of time and out of place on TG.

If I want to know his life story and meet his schoolboy chums, I'll watch something where I expect to get that (and I won't, because I don't).

I assumed the quotation marks indicated a tongue in cheek response mocking the usual Alt-Right Beeb haters responses.

Of course, you're right - Amazon spent a fortune replicating the model because it's so successful, with limited success in my view - Sadly neither current TG or the GT are a match for CHM TG at its peak.

It felt a bit thrown together but it was amusing and watchable.

I like Harris far less in Top Gear than his own stuff but he is still top drawer when it comes to reviews

It's not a serious car show and hasn't been since Quentin Wilson and Jeremy Clarkson did the Blues Brothers skit in 1993. https://youtu.be/igQmmT30XJY?t=42

It's entertainment, and it's entertainment that makes the BBC money. And since perhaps 52% of the population are going to stop paying their licence fee as the BBC doesn't make Fox News look like a bunch of lily-livered liberals, it'll need as much of that money as it can get.

None of the executive cars came out of it badly, and it won't do their sales figures any harm at all. Writing off a Volvo S60 will have cost Volvo significantly less than a 30 second advert in the middle of Britain's Got X Factor Island. OK, I wince when a very nice car that I couldn't afford gets damaged in the same of entertainment, but when it comes to the corporate advertising budget it's just money.
Nissan spent considerably more than the cost of the S60 having a seven man bobsleigh built. It was used in a promotional video to dealers only, promoting the new 7 seat X-trail.

Like you said, it’s peanuts to Volvo and there’s still most of its value left in it. It’s not as if the whole £50k had to be written off.

Why are they allowed to break the law though? That Maserati with uncovered wheels is illegal, AFAIK you have to cover the tread at the top of the wheel? And they obviously break the speed limits and drive like cocks on that road in the welsh borders they use.

I don't really know what to think of the latest stuff. Covid hasn't helped at all whatsoever but the last episode felt a bit forced. It's as if the ideas aren't up to scratch and the script can't keep up. I though the three presenters did well in the last, what two or three series, but we almost need to see more of Monkey on his own mixed in with the silly stuff. His pre-TG YouTube stuff was great, the F40/F50 film for example

I still want to see him (and hopefully Sabine when she's well) taking on a race at the Nurburgring together (the 24 hours, maybe with the two other presenters looking at what everyone else is doing, especially everyone camping out in the woods) and doing something like the RAC race at Goodwood. This, my friends, is proper TV:

and there's a longer version here:

Just caught the latest Ep of Top Gear and actually quite enjoyed it. Lovely seeing the 220 and F40 going toe to toe. Of course they should have also had a RUF CTR instead of the Lambo (given it was about top speeds) but given what happened to the Lambo, maybe it was a good thing.

So Paddy manages to wreaks a £150k Lambo, to go with Freddie’s 60k Volvo, simply because of a lack of talent. They are making clarkson, etc look like proper racing drivers. It also explains why the BBC are now chasing the over 75 for licence fees.

Fair play to Freddie for taking that Lambo up the wall of death, no wonder they fitted a roll cage (all within the allowed budget). lolz.

I imagine that the Road was closed to the general public during the filming. As for exposed wheels, I know it’s illegal to have wheels sticking out beyond the wheel arch, but I don’t know what the law would say if the body work was missing, especially if the wheel track was as specified. I am sure it would have failed an MOT at its next inspection, but I doubt one was due. Top gear would however would have had to inform their insurance company of the changes for it to be driven on the public highway. I wonder if they did this

Definitely a huge improvement on the first episode.

Wall of death was a bit pointless, but kind of fun, too.

    F40s are always worth watching

I found myself a teeny bit annoyed when Paddy crashed that iconic classic. I hope the owner didn't mind, that it was already crash-repaired.

I love the outdoor format though, - much better than standing around in that hanger, a chance to see everyone's cars also. Dreaded lurgy or not, they should continue that audience set up :)

The company car episode was a laugh, fairly realistic for the audience too.

Wall of death I don’t think added much to the write offs however the take on musical chairs cracked me

I am clearly not the target audience for this but caught a bit of this while waiting for another show - as fun as your house burning down.

    Jeeeeze. Tonight’s show was awful.

Fast forwarded through the entire program apart from the first few minutes of the Honda E. Great to see a proper new car review, but then they made it into another stupid race.

    Maybe I’m getting old.

That was the worst episode of Top Gear that I think I have ever seen. Paddy McGuiness just shouted his way through a series of complete non events in that ice cream truck. I complained to my wife that it was giving me a headache! The rest of this series had been largely acceptable but this was an incredible let down.

That was dire, I don't mind Flintoff as he's always likely to have a go at something, but whatever Paddy was paid for this series was too much

Can't believe things have gone so much downhill.
Personally I haven't watched a single episode since Hammond, May & Clarkson left; but I was going to give it another chance.
I do enjoy the Grand Tour though, although I think they've slowed down on those episodes too now, and James May has gone to Japan?!

Like most fans of the 'old Top Gear' I tried to get into this series when it first started but I though it has all been poor and I watched 10 minutes last night and gave up - utter rubbish!
