Rolex if you want others to know. Blancpain if you are happy that almost no-one knows.

Both are good in their own way....... the FF is “prettier” in my opinion and has more interesting aspects of finishing to it.

The new Blancpain with 'Blancpain' written in the side of the case or the extra large SD with red writing? Ugly things. Either a vintage and original Fifty Fathoms or Seadweller, out of the two the Great White wins hands down.

Something else definitely, having owned both the FF and SD. They are quite different in size and how they wear. What that something is belongs to another thread.

In the real world the FF is easily obtainable with discount, the SD is subject to the current Rolex madness. Personally I would take a FF out of the two.

FF you can get a large discount off RRP. SD will be over RRP unless you have a good relationship with an AD. On that basis the FF is far better value.

You buy both of them for RRP and the FF will tank in value whilst the SD would get your money back and possibly a profit. On that basis the SD is far better value.

As to the better watch, I’ve got a SD and it’s great. I’ve also looked into getting a FF in great detail and from what I can gather it’s a fantastic watch - mainly based on what people have told me to be fair.

And lose money. That’s why the FF is available with discount.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

My triple-six with the FF Milspec, plus the Jaeger Deep Sea.

I wouldn't like to choose between them, they're all great!

Love the Deep Sea; what a fabulous watch. And I really envy your 40mm FF - that would be my pick of the lot.

Of the standard FF vs. the SD I would personally go Blancpain; yes, the resale value isn’t as good, but it is such a beautiful watch with better finishing. It is however quite large so this is dependent on it suiting your wrist.

For the purposes of everyday wear, both are “equal” and you will not be able to discern any differences in their mechanical “ability”.

The FF has a much better decorated movement though. Plus IMHO, much nicer and more interesting finishes on the case.

Totally. Absolutely. Anything else will be simply stupid. It would be a free watch. See my signature below.

Rolex are good value when you sell them. Most people don't buy watches for the purpose of selling them, so it's not stupid to look at other brands who are offering a better product at the price.

I currently own DSSD, SD43, and a FF. Each is quite a large timepiece, the FF has a butter smooth wind and an amazing power reserve, looks fabulous, I even like the BP script on the case side, but feels a tad delicate with the ceramic bezel. The Rolex are more tool-ish and have a tougher feel. All IMHO, other opinions are available.

I'd never thought of it that way and you are, of course, spot-on.

OP there are too many variables in your question; what would you be wearing it for? Is it a keeper? Do you need a bracelet option? etc.

As the old saying goes. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Dosn't really matter which one. It's you're choice and someone else might choose something different.

    Blancpain for me.

Too expensive for me, but if I was spending that kind of money, it would go on a Fifty Fathoms, I think (Not that I've actually tried one, I may feel differently if I did).

It seems most replies are based on value retention rather than comparing the quality of the watch.

I would be interested to know however from owners of all three which they think is better. I have read in the past a few comments that the finish on Blancpain is much better than Rolex, I had a look at a few BP watches over in Switzerland (Not the FF) and found them rather plain and nothing that would really command the price they were selling, they were mostly dress watches though so I cant comment on the sports watches.

I have the SD43 and love it but I do also like the FF. I don't know if I like the FF enough to ever buy one but it does look like a very nice watch. I think better is up to the owner and what they value as I'm sure at that level both watches are better than the owners will ever need them to be.

Exactly this. ‘Better’ is a very subjective term.

Look at these three. All stunning. All different... but better..? Better for what? For who?

Style, build, residuals, recognisability ( maybe it is a word).

‘Better’ is entirely an individual thing unless you give a criteria.
