Thread: Waist Size vs Trouser Size

    Waist Size vs Trouser Size

Must be a whole lot of flattery going on at the shops. I have been a 34 inch in jeans and trousers for as long as I can remember. Sometimes I can squeeze into a pair of 32 inch jeans with some brands with a bit of muffin top going on.

I have not put on any weight recently and my 34 inch jeans still fit me comfortably, but I took a tape measure to my gut tonight and found that I’m actually 37 inches around the waist.

Maybe the manufacturers flattering sizes are leading us to think we are healthier than we actually are?

Bit of a random thing this :-)

I never understood the sizing for men, let alone women. I’m usually around 34in/32in (when I’m not as chubby as now) when it comes to trousers but cycling clothing is what gets me. I’m anything from M to XL in some brands! And sometimes even the same brand have different sizes in different models. What’s the point?

There are some jeans brands I can't slide my calf through wearing 34W

I'm sure I'm still a 32 inch waist, but they only seem to label them as 36 inch these days...
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

You’re not going crazy it’s the same for me. The tape measure says I’m 3-4 inches bigger than my trouser sizes.

Always a shocker when you try a belt the same size as your jeans and it's four inches too short. They've been doing it for years as it helps people buy clothes. We're so flattered when we fit into a smaller size we buy whatever it is. I have a dreadful pair of Ralph Lauren jeans with a 34 inch waist and there's absolutely no chance I have a 34 inch waist.

My 32"waist jeans flatter my 62 year old self but like the majority on here I know it's a lie as the tape measure shows.

But I can remember getting a made to measure suit in the early 80's when I had a 30 1/2" waist and the tailor measured me at 35" ????

Sometimes depends on the cut. Low rise often come up a bit smaller than those you wear around your waist.

But I agree regarding sizing. My last pair of shorts were a small (30-32).

It seems according to this thread that many posters are slim. Yet on SC, almost everything is XXL.

Vivienne Westwood polo shirts make even Belstaff look huge.
Buying XL isn't good for my ego but buying an L and looking like a sausage skin isn't either.
John Smedley on the other hand are a relaxed and roomy M ??

“Vanity fit” it’s called in the trade. I wear 31” jeans but am a comfortable 33-34” in reality

I wonder if garments have '34' on the label instead of '34 inches' and we assume it means 34 inches.

Otherwise, this could be a bigger issue than the emissions scandal.*

*Or not. It's the same principle only using fabric instead of noxious gases. Probably.

I suspect that there's a vanishingly small number of members who wear their trousers at their actual waist.

The measurement should be taken at a point above the navel & below the ribcage, not on the hips or the bellybutton.

I've generally noticed about a six inch difference between actual waist measurements and my trouser sizes.

Similar, mine range from 32-36, but they all fit. I’d guess I’m a real 37 most of the time, and always between a real 35-38.
It's just a matter of time...
