Chances of discount on a PAM at Goldsmiths?

My brother is finally going to buy a PAM, probably tomorrow, and I’m wondering whether he should be bargaining for a discount. He’s after the Base 01000 model at £4300. I wouldn’t want him to be embarrassed by trying to negotiate when a discount isn’t likely.

What do you think? Worth a go? What percentage would you think likely.

    Thanks.

I don’t think asking “what’s the best price you can do” would hurt. All they can say is no. Especially as this is not one of the “hot” Rolex, AP or PP models.

The watch shops would have you think business is thriving during and post lockdown and that customers need to scramble for stock. But we all know that is not the case!

Ih he;s plnning on using their 0% finance offer then the chances of a discount will be slim. However if paying by debit / credit card I think a 10% discount would be achievable. Dicsounts are down to managers discretion so just because someone has achieved a discount at one store doesnt mean it will be guven at another etc. But chances of a discount are greatly increased if you ask.

Thanks all. Just spoken to him and he does want the 0% albeit with a couple of grand deposit. Goldsmiths was a resounding ‘no’ on the discount. He’s talking to Berry’s now.

The barbers in Chichester are now charging £15 to cut the hair of a six-year-old boy. The mood seems to be for grabbing every penny. You can understand why. Doubt if jewellers are any different. They know there is money about.....

I’ve only ever bought one PAM, a 590. I called two AD’s and negotiated and both offered a good discount from memory. I’d call half a dozen if need be to see what deals are about.

Having dealt with Berrys, they normally can give you a 5% discount and the 0%IFC, I think for 3 years on Panerai.
They have an offer on at the moment which requires a 5%deposit rather than the usual 10%, which is maybe an indicator of tough times for many ADs.

About a year maybe a little more, Panerai was one of the not available on IFC brands and that was instructed from Panerai themselves to the AD network if they wished to stock that brand. That business model changed pretty quickly when sales went South off the cliff.

Might help if he buys nearer to the end of the month, at least the last week.

    What about a grey dealer.

I purchased my Omega from Swisswatchesdirect.

They can source Panerai and it looks like you can expect 15% discount.
They also mention 0% finance on the website.
    Might be worth a look.

    Cheers

I naively thought that all Pams were acquired with a substantial automotic discount..

Shall we say I'm not currently ''a convert''.

How does automatic become automotic? Predictive text my ****.

He gave them a call this morning and was less than impressed. Firstly he felt that he was interrupting the bloke who clearly couldn't be bothered to talk to him. He can get 10% off with 50% down to place the order and 50% paid once they get it in stock, no finance option.

None yet. They're bringing the watch up from Leeds tomorrow then he'll go in to see them. They were open to discussing his wishes but he has to go in to do that. I'll keep you all posted.

Would possibly look away from that model, snap on case back and the new 3 day movement I think. (Unsure if 100m WR or 300m) maybe look at one of the older models which went 8 day in house movement, screw in case back and 300m

Chances of discount on a PAM at Goldsmiths?

Ive been told in the past that discounts aren't available if using interest free as the retailer covers the interest costs of finance with financial partner.

i may have been miss informed though.

i would expect to get between 10% and 13% for a cash sale.

I agree. Gone are the days when that was feasible. Perhaps 10/15 years ago. Nowadays, I would say 10% would be decent.

My last few have been at 5% discount plus a couple of free straps and sometimes a buckle
Its worth looking at the strap option because you will end up buying them anyway

Why do you say that? I don;t think I've ever swapped a strap for aesthetics, only when they are worn, which is rare with 300 timepieces.

Interesting you should say that as this is one of his negotiating points. The watch he wants doesn't have the strap he wants so is asking them to change it. He absolutely refuses to even consider buying other straps for it. His view is that one watch matches one strap and why should he spend £5k on a watch and then change the strap? He thinks that way because he's a normal person, not a watch head-case like us!

Me? I'd have ordered a couple of Toshi straps before collecting the PAM and would be happily swapping away!

Ha ha! You comment about him being normal and is being watch head-case made me chuckle! I thought part of the joy of PAMs are changing the straps!

Update: after having a fairly positive conversation with Berry's on Saturday they were bringing the watch from Leeds to Newcastle on Monday for him to view Monday or Tuesday. It's now Thursday and they've never been in touch. He rang once to chase up and they said they'd ring him back. He's sent two emails that are as yet unanswered.

They must be selling boat-loads of watches if they can ignore a potential £5k sale. Needless to say he's walking away.

I did think it odd it was taking so much time. For the one PAM I’ve ever owned I called Berry’s and asked if they would knock X off (can’t remember the amount now but quite a bit) and they agreed. I also called Mallorys and they agreed. All done in two quick phone calls and I bought from Mallorys as they were nearer. Very easy.

Recently someone told me that they could probably get 20% off a new PAM from an AD. I never pursued it so cannot confirm it for definite.

My last 2 new PAMs were a 720 and a 721. Around 2 years ago. Got 20% of each.

3 more purchases and you'll have a complete one! Not sure it'll look too good though.

    Sorry.

Could be worth talking to Panerai online. I enquired a few weeks ago about a trade up on mine. They’ve been chasing me non stop. A deal could be had

David Nicholson is the manager at Newcastle, he’s a good lad and will be mortified if he knew about this level of service.

Get in contact with him directly, he’ll get it sorted pdq.
