    70s LEDs on bracelets

I've just been looking at this thread and it reminded me that my Father had a reasonably chunky red digital on a stainless bracelet in the 70s. IIRC, it had a circular dark red crystal.

Is that the kind of thing about which we already have a reference thread? It would be good to see a few examples...

Bill Tutte's work led directly to the creation of the first programmable electronic digital computer so it was rather satisfying to spot a Pulsar P4 Time Computer on his wrist in an image on display at the "Bill Tutte: Mathematician + Codebreaker" exhibition (running until January in The Mansion at Bletchley Park).

Please look him up if you not aware of his incredible achievements. It will quickly become apparent why he is one of my absolute heroes.

I keep my eyes peeled for a reasonably priced P4, for now the closest I have is this very early calculator.

This used to belong to my dad & found it the other day in a drawer. It's in great shape, the battery life was terrible & he rarely wore it.

I must get some replacement cells, takes 2x RW44 which I was very surprised to find are still available (or equivs.)

    ^Love those.

Very evocative. Thanks for the links.

I can see this is a deep rabbit hole I'm about to plunge into...

These were kicking around a few years ago and managed to pick a couple up.

I remember these, and buying a couple, seemed so space age at the time. And then having to have the LCD type when they came out and suddenly the LED watches became so unfashionable!
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

I wonder whether this thread might garner more attention if it had 'LED' in the title rather than just 'red'.

Alternatively, it could be that there just isn't that much interest in chunky 70s loveliness in these parts nowadays

Some lovely pics here. There is something comforting about the display.

M, I've tweaked the title. I am going to do a little digging...

    70s LEDs on bracelets

A Soviet one from me; naturally they made a very well engineered contribution about five years after everyone else. This Elektronika 1 was released in 1978 but apparently was on sale in the domestic market as late as 1990.

This one has the original bracelet. Sorry no display, I discovered the battery is dead when I got it out to photograph. It does work quite well; time, date and running seconds can be cycled through.

I remember having one of these, It had a silver bezel with a sunburst finish on it, black face, unfortunately I dont have it anymore. In my head it was a Lorus, but can't be sure. Had a look around on google but I can't find anything that matches my memory of this.

I would love to pick up an Omega TC if I could find one in decent shape

While the company hasn't a particularly strong horological history, I was always taken with the 1970s "Black watch" from Sinclair Radionics. It was built to a price point, but has its own style - quite eccentric.

I never owned one, so I haven't had to live with the design flaws like terrible battery life.
    :)
