Maybe it’s a daft question, but I’m going to ask it: Couldn’t the auction house have done those things pre-sale? Tidying up the crystal, as you did, reveals that the dial and hands are in great condition. That wasn’t altogether obvious from the pictures that you and other potential bidders were working from.

Yes I’m sure they could , and some do , but it’s a tricky one for them .. do they sell as is or do they start tinkering and if they do where does it end ? Do they present all the pieces in a sale as best as possible showing all the highs and lows clearly ... or do they let the market decide on what info and images they provide .... if they polished up and found oil and blistering all
Over the dial , what do they do ... they probably just cost the clients 000’s ...most seem to go middle ground , show as is , bidders decide , and apply their ability to tell good from bad .. and more often than not roll the dice ... some you win some you loose ... there have for example been plenty 369 dial subs sold in uk auctions last few years that look ok on pics but once received in person have blemishes and scratches on the dial ...

Sounds like they leave them in poor condition in some kind of intriguing 5517-shaped game of pass-the-parcel where the risk lies with the buyer.

Thanks for posting clear pics. Pleased it went to you.

Absolutely stunning - love that you wear all your watches and they don't spend their lives stuck in a safe.
    Enjoy!

Was it their watch? If not they can only advise the seller to tidy it up.

You’re right, of course. Not their property at all.
