    Reviving an SKX009 for berty234

Rob (Berty234) started a thread here
    https://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.p...eviving-an-SKX
stating that he had an SKX009 that needed some work doing to it. As it happened - that same week I’d just finished modding my own SKX and had various parts (a new movement being the main one) that could help him out. A few messages later and the postman delivered this lovely watch for me to set about working on.

    Watch as received:

    First thing - caseback off:

    And crown and stem removed:

Dial and hands are in lovely condition:

Rob mentioned that the crown thread might be worn. Actually it just looked very dirty, toothpicks to the ready:

The crown should run down those threads smoothly now.

The rest of the case now disassembled, including removing the bezel:

Case cleaned up and the crystal gasket, old gasket removed and replaced with new crystal gasket. Then glass pressed into place:

The original movement was a 7S26A - the version I have is a C. There are definitely some improvements with the later iterations.

Dial in great condition, colour just starting to change on the lume:

    Hands off:

    Dial off:

I removed the day and date wheels and their respective assemblies to swap them from the existing movement to the new one, in case they had started to fade. The colour of the day/datewheels was the same both old and new, and the datewheel position lever is slightly different between the 7S26A and C version. So I kept the datewheel from the new movement and swapped the old day wheel in.

    Complete reassembled movement:

Ok so now the hands are going back on with the date change mechanism starting around 11pm:

Other hands on and movement goes back into the case:

Rob wanted to keep as many parts as original as possible but at this stage I noticed that existing crown was loose on the stem so I’ swapped in a new crown and stem (and gasket) as Seiko only supply the stem and crown as a completed assembly.

Now a new caseback seal can be greased and fitted:

And the caseback can then be screwed back down:

Rob said the bezel was sticking when rotated. Firstly the bezel was full of dirt, so that was cleaned, and the gasket removed:

And the ratchet spring was broken:

So that’ is replaced with a brand new one:

The bezel was soaked in warm soapy water and cleaned with a small brush.

Then a new gasket was greased and fitted (shown with the old):

And the bezel pressed back into position:

    Finished, old vs new!

Thanks to Rob for entrusting me with his watch, it was a real pleasure working on it!

Wow! Great set of images showing stage by stage the transformation.

Lucky Rob having someone on the forum to help him get this fixed up! Looks great.

TheGent by name, a gent by nature! He did all this for me within a day or two of receiving the watch too. He’s done a great job on it.

For me this is what watches are all about. Part of someone’s story. Don’t get me wrong I mainly love wearing them, but looking after them and understanding them gives me another level of appreciation

Great work and well done. That bezel looked disgusting. As others have said, this is "my kind of thread".
A question for TheGent; when you remove a new crystal from it's packaging do you find that it requires to be cleaned before fitting and if so, what do you use. I have found that
Rodico is sometimes not enough for smudges.

Haha - it certainly was disgusting Warm soapy water sorted that!

Crystal should be clean from the packaging. Otherwise a lint free cloth works for me.

Crazy the amount the of crud that builds up. Yuk!

Great write up and good work

Did you replace the crystal with a new one or did you polish the old one? You only mentioned the new gasket.

And would all that crud on the crown thread and bezel have come off in a ultrasonic bath? I note you removed it manually.

Yep it is - I tend to wash my watches every now and again.

Ah no it was a new crystal - should have said. I have polished mineral crystals in the past - takes forever and they are cheap enough to replace.

Yes I have got an ultrasonic bath actually, only a cheap one, but I find that’s better for small delicate parts. For case parts like this - a tooth pick first then a toothbrush with warm soapy water cleans most things up.

Yes what a great post, I love to see the inner workings of a watch. Also interesting to see the strip down and rebuild sequence.

Plus its great to see a used and loved watch brought back to life.

Love these type of threads - thanks for documenting.

I find them so much more interesting than the ones discussing prices of those dull green divers watches -

Excellent thread and great work - seeing the Seiko stripped down like that is a reminder of the quality of the engineering and excellent value for money. Am I correct in thinking these and the 07s have been discontinued?

This was my dad’s old watch, which I had sat on my desk for a couple of years - he was so pleased to see it working again and happy with the work that it is now his watch again ...! He’s given me a 007 back in return which is similarly beaten up. Not sure what he does to them...

Yes - they are now discontinued.

Don’t be fooled by what people say about Seikos being inferior quality wise. I’ve worked on watches that cost 10 times as much as these and are certainly not 10 times better. In my opinion they are the best value for money diver out there.

Greetings all, please look at the posts Graham has made on my SKX013.

Absolutely fantastic work, the new hacking hand windable movement makes the watch so so much better. I don't know why Seiko went down the route of the more street style or whatever the 5KX line is supposed to represent. Good honest tool diver watches with the benefits of the new movements, at old price points would endear these classic old models even more to peoples hearts.

TheGent, he certainly lives up to his profile name, an absolute pleasure to talk to and deal with. A true watch enthusiast, and his attention to detail is outstanding. Thoroughly recomended if anyone wants some being done to their Seikos.

Graham, all the best mate, you have made an old 013 wearer very happy
