Not sure how this slipped under the radar... maybe because the original article is behind a paywall on The Times website.

Anyway... good or bad ?
(remember, no politics in G&D please)
The post is about digital ID, not politics...
in the same way that GCHQ is a security organisation, not a political institution.
I admire your trust in the membership OP, but there's no way this thread should be in the G&D.
Maybe ask Eddie to get it moved. Otherwise he'll have to clean it up later.
Tsk, you're obsessed with getting off the ground.
Abort! Abort!
I fell for this one around 10 years - they touted digital ID cards as a replacement for the passport in Europe.
I was travelling extensively for work at the time, and it seemed like a grand idea - what could possibly go wrong.
I recall going to central Manchester, having the interview and paying my £20 or so.
Six months later, the whole damn scheme was axed - I never did get my money back.
Maybe I get a free ID card this time round !
Just about every country in Europe has a national identity card, can’t see what the problem is?
i would rather have one as it’s handy for I.D instead of carrying a passport around (i don’t have a U.K. driving licence)
Well , if Tony Blair is throwing his weight behind it , what could possibly be bad about it ?
I can’t help feeling they are inevitable, but there is also a lot of potential pitfalls.
It will need careful planning and even more careful oversight.
