Funnily enough my Dad recommended I didn’t get a tattoo done! He had one of a woman in a grass skirt.

Regarding breaks, they're excluded from the chargeable time, not that every minute is recorded on a spreadsheet! It's hardly a challenging approach.
Ok, fair enough. You clearly know what you’re talking about.

I have over 30 different artists on me and never been charged per hour.

Interesting and a little weird that many of those who are heavily tattooed are often overly aggressive when putting their views on the subject across. It's happened a few times on this and the other tattoo threads, in fact.

    Why is that?

My wife had one last year she spent ages looking online and eventually narrowed her choice of tattooist down to four or five, then she made contact with them, this helped narrow it down to two very easily.
In the end she picked one, when she got there she was asked if the apprentice could do it, after she sketched a drawing my wife was happy so went with it, it's exactly what she had asked for and she couldn't be happier.

I have a crappy shark on my shoulder that was done about 25 years ago. I am not necessarily against them and firmly believe in people choice to what the hell they like as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else! Feels a bit different when it’s your son though.......

Instagram is your friend here. Find all the local artists on there and if they're any good they'll have a full portfolio for you to view. Look at the line work, for consistency and accuracy. Also check that the anatomy stacks up, all in proportion, etc.

If its black and grey your son is after make sure you pick a black and grey specialist rather than someone who does a bit of everything.

I'd echo this bit of advice (and also the horses for courses comment!)

I got my first one done at Uni when I was 19 after a bet that I basically lost. No Entry sign on my bum cheek. Also as someone said previously, do I regret it? No. It still makes people laugh (at my idiocy). Happy to be the "butt" of p!$$ taking. Would I get it removed? No. Would I get it done again? No. I've grown up and I'm #woke. Maybe a give way to oncoming traffic sign instead...

Since then, I've always imposed a 12 month window on myself. If I want the same thing for a year, I will get it done. At 43 I only have 3 in total. 4th due imminently as decided at beginning of first lockdown.

Might be just me but as you get older you not only know your own mind better, but you also start to care less what others think and do more for yourself.

My two small tattoos were done on the basis of me telling the artist what I wanted and before starting he told me the total cost at outset. Just an anecdotal addition to the conversation

    True enough.

A couple of years ago I was visiting someone. The heat was more than I could stand so I had a short sleeved t-shirt on, tattoos visible. The person I was visiting said "you don't seem the type to have tattoos". Make of that what you will, I wasn't going to ask. Tattoos more of a middle class thing now, which in my experience is usually where the judgementalism has come from towards me. Again, she was from a middle class upbringing. No offence intended, just my personal experience.

Thanks again for all the advice. He has a consultation over Zoom booked for next week. He removed price/cost from the decision and just found someone that specialises in the type of tattoo that he wants (turns out he is expensive but hey ho...). They will talk about what he is looking forward, decide on a design idea then get it booked in.

We will see how it goes I guess!

Being your son's first tattoo perhaps he should consider the design's location and possible pain. We all feel it to different degrees - nothing to do with being a tough guy - and I know for a fact that I wouldn't be able to cope with it around the back and underside of my arm (near the armpit) while a woman I know is completely impervious. It would be a shame for your son to find out in the first hour that he simply can't go through with his dream design. Then again, maybe there are pain relief products these days (it's certainly been a while for me).

Small addition yesterday. Simple geometric design I put together a while ago (still living by the 12 month rule for wanting before getting). I've use the tattooist before and planned to have it in the centre of the wrist, she suggested it should be offset to the side and we spent a while testing position (and sizes) as I was initially adamant. We actually spent more time testing than the tattoo took. She, in my opinion, was right!

Edited to add - it was literally done at 7pm last night so still in the slightly swollen stage. Having used her before, I know she does quite "fine" work so it'll look better in a couple of weeks and less blurred (for those that maybe haven't had them before)

And your next trip is for a vasectomy?

Mine gave the vampires something to chat about this week.

They decided to start listing botanical names for plants and were looking to me to confirm if they were right or not. I have to say I was not entirely prepared for this, but did my best and if nothing else it was a distraction.

That's a great design to represent those initials. Care to explain why off-centre was your preference and what convinced you?

Can't help but think that would have been better as aliquid latine.

Haha thanks! No need for a vasectomy, apparently my personality is a more reliable form of contraception.

Thank you. When we had the testing prints in the middle, it looked like a button (that probably sounds weird) but also looked a bit too contrived if that makes sense? She did try to explain to me but it's all the straight lines, the off centre looked better balanced.

Sorry I missed it before but that is a brilliant tattoo, very much made me laugh!

I have the kid's names and birthdays in the same Courier font (one on each foot) . They have genuinely come in very useful over the years...

Well, having started the thread I should probably say that I had mine done (although not fully healed in this image). I also had some lovely peacock feathers added to the dreamcatcher on the shoulder camera right (you can see one, but not both of them).

Or more simply "aliquid", as that is something, in Latin.

At least Mrs Gyp stopped me getting "and something in Greek up this one" on the other arm.

Thanks very much - it undultates depending on how I'm holding my arm so hard to portray clearly. Bea wants me to get a half sleeve on my right arm now, but I'm not convinced just yet. It's very addictive though!

I think they’ve come out well Tony :)

I’ve got a few ideas, but local tattooists are fairly crap here, so a while longer to wait, and then I’d need to find someone!
It's just a matter of time...

I would love to start looking at half/full sleeves. One of the subject matters that has been a constant in my life is Star Wars. I would love "light side" and "dark side" content on each... problem is, the last 18 months I've let myself go a bit LOL... I haven't trained either with weights or within various martial arts I do (or did!) and I've gone soft all over!

Fashion………..you know how fickle public tastes are. Do you hear the remarks whispered between people?
That sounds rude, which I don’t intend. And I avoid all remarks. But opinions can differ sharply. I spend years wearing flares…things do change. I used to drive a little scooter with a Parker trimmed with fox. And lights everywhere.Good times.
Except I should have bought a big Triumph, not a little Vespa. Always, the tyranny of fashionable tastes.

Basically you have future-proofed your arms so if your sleeves done now they'll still look good when you've got old and wrinkly.

    Good effort!

Mine from 1987. How they fade over time. Not that I see them much on my back. Never regretted them ever. Often think about having them redone and probably will do one day as I have a friend who is a very good tattoo artist. I think I paid about £300 back in the day.

Thanks, I'm sure I'll get around to it one day. I actually booked myself in to do it in Vietnam at 1984 a few years back but never got there in time because I was doing a motorbike tour and was enjoying it so much it didn't seem to matter too much. Wish I has now because it would have been an indelible memory in ink.

Had mine done in the 70's and 80's, had them all redone back in 2002 and look great. The guy did say that whoever had done the original work was very good which made his work the more easier

I love that! I'm going to see my dude on Tuesday about extending my existing upper arm tat into a half-sleeve in the way you have. I'm after something similar to yours with maybe some colour in the cherry blossom.

It actually wasn't too bad. A bit nippy on certain parts. Main issue was just couldn't get comfortable in a sitting position. Just under four hours with about two 5 minute breaks so a wise decision to spilt the half sleeve into two sessions
