What he said. An incredible machine.
Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.

you know, the most amazing thing is that this plane/ship was built and stationed in Caspian sea, which is actually a lake. Who would they fight there is beyond me, only foreign country there is Iran, which was friendly with soviets.

Wasnt it a secret project hidden away that took the West several years to discover, making it a fairly good hiding place

I expect that security guard is guarding some pine trees in Siberia now, she was very specific with the date and time of her visit.
    Very interesting though.
    Cheers..

Is it the same thing? Dagestan is the Russian republic on the Caspian immediately above Azerbaijan.

  14. #14
No, the original Caspian Sea Monster was accidentally sunk.

I thought that she was going to say the guard woke up and said have a look around.

Destined for a museum, probably not top secret and maybe there to prevent pilfering or vandalism.

The prototype first flew in 1966 and an American spy satellite picked up images of it in 1967.

A great find, thanks for posting - I've watched countless documentaries about the Caspian Sea Monster and seen hundreds of images but never the inside. Fascinating.

Thanks for posting, glad it's being moved to a safer place, always had an interst in this since I saw it in some science magazine decades ago.

Amazing design, must have been on the Vodka I reckon!
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

Haha. Those ropey seats remind me very much of several Aeroflot flights I took back in the day - some of them were just seat frames with no upholstery. And the overhead luggage storage was a string net!

I sent the link of the Ekranoplan to a friend (British, living here in NED) who's into aviation. He sent me a reply and pointed me towards this: BAC TRS2 bomber

    Very interesting though.
I suspect there has been some mild exaggeration. I doubt there was a security guard and if there was...its Russia. He probably showed them around and I doubt its sensitive . Makes for a good story though.

I saw a very small but pretty much wrecked ekranoplan at the air museum in Riga , Latvia. Literally the size of a family car . No info but it was painted a pinky tan colour.

My abiding memory of one Aeroflot flight was of me sitting down into my seat and it promptly collapsing* under me. By chance a stewardess** was standing in the aisle next to me, saw what happened and simply shrugged before walking on.

Reminds me of looking into an early NASA space capsule at Kennedy Space Center. Looked like a spaceship built from parts and switches from Halfords!

Reminds me of a story my dad told me when he flew on Aeroflot in the early 80s. As the plan came into final approach and the fasten seat belt sign went on, most of the folk stood and lined up the aisle ready to get off. Cabin crew just shrugged.

I’ve often wondered why a lot of Soviet hardware has that turquiouse paint job ? I was travelling in an Indian Army MIL helicopter in Kashmir a few years ago and it was the same.

Yes found some info , seems to be a combination of visually preventing fatigue , cancelling out red night time lighting reflectioms.

Sounds like poppycock to me , newer planes don’t seem to use it any more. I’m pretty sure fighter pilots and commercial pilots don’t use red night lighting.

As for the visual fatigue , minimal if any impact.

I reckon the Russians just had a lot of turquouse enamel paint knocking about .

Thanks for posting that. I was surprised the interior seemed to be in such good condition.
