    Chocolate chocolate chocolate

I love chocolate - recently got given a box of Charbonnel et Walker. Some amazing flavours. Expensive but worth it.

What’s your favourite, whether it’s ‘cheap and cheerful’ or ‘gone into my overdraft’?

Used to be Hotel Chocolat until I discovered I’m allergic to cows milk. Dark chocolate is just not the same no matter what anyone says. Mouth feel is just not the same. I miss chocolate 😫

I usually have a stock of Lindt 90% as an everyday chocolate, good value for money and low sugar content.

Picked up a box of Valhrona at half price when flying last time. I like the single estates where you, like a good coffee or wine, taste the terroir. It’s fantastic how many flavours you can pick up from good chocolate.

Recently I have been taking to darker chocolate.

The other evening we had a chocolate craving but all we had in the house was “Lidl’s DARK Cooking Chocolate”

It tastes soooo good! Cheap too! This week I bought 2 more bars!

I always find all Lidl chocolate to be nice.

Being a typical Aberdonian I like the cheap stuff, got recommended the 50p bars from Sainsbury's and they're pretty good (originally they were the orange and white 'basics' brand but are now in a red wrapper called Lovett's).

    Tesco do a similar one.

The missus has been raving about Tony's Chocolonely bars recently, must admit their dark milk and pretzel piece bar was very good.

Dark chocolate for me, at least 70% and preferably organic, just because it's better innit. I'm partial to three or four squares of an evening with a glass of red, but not lately – far too sweaty for chocolate.

And I can't stand milk chocolate or chocolate confectionery. The closest I'll get is Green & Blacks with ginger or their Maya Gold, which are both 50%.

At lockdown peak I ran out and went to the local shop and all they had was Cadbury Bournville. Never again … worse then Hershey's

Talking of Hershey's, saw a video once taste testing chocolate - apparently Brits like it sweet, the USA likes it bitter and the Japanese like it salty.

Hershey to us UK folk isn’t a patch on Our chocolate!

Anything Belgian, they really do know how to make chocolates. I used to go to a wonderful chocolatier's in Ypres - spent an absolute fortune in there every time!

I'm also partial to Plain Chocolate Bounty bars, I could eat them all day long!
    Best Regards - Peter

I'd hate to be with you when you're on your own.

Had some of that this week...excellent. Can't recall the flavour but it was like a posh Dime bar.

Tried some chocs from Paul A Young in Soho which are supposed to be the bees knees last year. Nice display on offer - kind of pick n mix on steroids - but you’ll need pills when paying up. Tasty but overpriced. My favourites are from Chococo in Dorset who do mail order too. Slightly better than Hotel Chocolate imho.

My local supermarket (Monoprix) in Paris sells Chocolonely. A bit pricey - €3.80 for a 180g bar, but very tasty. As well as regular milk chocolate they do nougat, caramel and salty butter, almond and sea salt.

Mrs Tifa is a sales merchandiser for Cadbury's.
Our back bedroom is rammed with the stuff.
Plenty of samples and experimental new lines arriving all the time for appraisal.
    It's hell.

I've been exploring cocorunners. The variety of tastes and styles is fascinating.

OMG that would be too tempting! I remember when I was a kid my mates dad had something to do with vending machines. As you can imagine his garage was like a kids dream!! Sweets, crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks by the box load!!! They didn’t have a biscuit tin in the house! His dad used to say help yourself in the garage! It was like a personal tuck shop!!!

Love a Daim bar once in a while. Can't keep any in the house or I'll finish them in a day. Had a Snickers from the freezer the other day and it was lovely, would definitely try the same with a Mars.

Not into posh chocolate. Both my parents are irish and I inherited the Pikey palate.

Same here. Give me a bar of Cadbury’s Dairy milk or galaxy over a posh choc any day. I can polish off a big sharing bar in a film! Oops!

My palate is changing and I am succumbing to dark chocolate too, but in smaller quantities.

I've heard that dark chocolate in moderation is like red wine - it may prolong life. Apparently. I'm unconvinced.

Years ago I used to love Cadbury’s Fruit and Nut, now the beancounter driven new owners have trashed the brand, I would not touch it if it was free! Fortunately there is still plenty of decent chocolate about.

    Melchior is really nice

The bar with hazelnuts is lovely & the strawberry bar is good too

The factory is just down the road from us, when you visit the shop you can watch them making the chocolate through the viewing window if you are ever down this way.

I remember when Thornton’s did some really nice chocolates many years ago. Then they were taken over and now it’s just the same as most mediocre offerings by the big names.

Usually have a couple of bars of Lindt 90% , allow myself a piece or two every night along with a nice glass of Lagavulin or Laphroaig .
Green and Blacks , Valharona an some of the smaller brands as offers and discounts dictate

Otherwise I'm right off the rubbish stuff , no cadbury's or anything else like that...its not really chocolate . Its so cloying and sweet I feel like its not fit for human consumption. Even as a kid I wasn't a big fan.
I'd take a Hershey bar over dairy milk any day

  48. #48
If you like white chocolate then try the cooking chocolate in Lidl........you will thank me later.

I used to like Cadbury Creme Eggs until they started putting that awful crappy Nestle chocolate instead of Dairy Milk on them. Ever since then I’ve boycotted them.
