Arguably the most Iconic watch in the world is the Rolex Submariner, so that can be the only answer to the OP's question.
Don’t worry, I find it very entertaining

I would say that the Sub Date is probably the quintessential watch full stop, let alone just Rolex - for the average man on the street that's almost definitely what they'd think of as a 'sports watch'

Many wouldn't understand the term 'sports watch' or might think it's something with a 'stopwatch'.

My impression is that the GMT seems particularly popular at the moment, whilst the date sub appears to be the classic "safe" option and the Yacht Master the left field choice.

So at first glance it would be a date sub - but is that actually the case?

I'm looking to chop in my entire collection (aside for a DJ and a full sized auto pre-bond Seamaster) for one in a bid to reduce servicing costs to a sensible level, so I'm keen to know what the general consensus is, or if there even is one...
For me its Daytona, Daytona Daytona. The best SS Rolex :)

Rolex Submariner date is the only watch that has created a full homage watch INDUSTRY.

Invicta, Alpha, Steinhart, Sandoz, Davosa, Junkers, Ginault.... etc etc.

A wild guess or your expert opinion?

No, a mistake in all probability :-)
Is it a service insert? Anyway, nice watch.

I think it gets confusing if you have more than one - I think my 5513 is lovely, but I don't wear it much, same goes for my Explorer ll - I used to wear it a lot in preference to my 16610, but of the three as a daily wearer I prefer the 16610, to me that's what I feel is a Rolex Sub

you can only wear one watch at once although some people wear 2 - one of each wrist

(I now generally wear a Seiko, somehow I feel more comfortable with one)

Purely subjective but in my book must be either a Submariner or a yellow gold Day-Date on a President.

For me there is a strong argument for a Sub Date but I prefer that aestheic with the only complication i find genuinely useful.

The one I bought last week!
(And the only Rolex I own which made it quite an easy choice).

I have an Explorer but the answer to this has to be a sub.

My choice would be different, but the answer to the question has been the same since 1953
It's just a matter of time...

It’s not the TZ favourite, those being the 14060 or 16600, however I think the 16610 is THE Submariner, 5 digit case and the date with cyclops that is so recognisable.

    Also wearing Seiko these days

Yes, it’s a service insert, I missed out on one of the last 60 min inserts available when it was serviced in 2006.
I can have one fitted but....

For a One watch collection it would have to be a 114060, no cyclops. iconic and timeless Design and I’d go ceramic, newer movement for reliability and scratch resistant bezel. To be honest most of the above mentioned models are all classics. A good 14060m would also be a good choice

On the back of this I'm going to pull the relevant funds together and try to source a sub (no-date or date, in that order of preference), and in the meantime see if I can find somewhere to compare one or both with an SD, as I've never actually had the opportunity to handle one.
SD felt top heavy to me your mileage may vary

Think this is my vote too. Frequently kick myself for not buying a 5-digit Pepsi when they were affordable.
