End of car lease - better to repair dents & scratches before handing it back?

I'm coming to the end of my lease of a Golf R wagon leased through VWFS and the car's picked up a number of dents and scratches during the time I've had it. All 4 of the laser-cut wheels also have some kerbing to them.

I always expected there'd be a cost over and above the fair wear and tear policy as where we live in the centre of town there's no off-street parking, so dents and damage are infuriating but inevitable, plus I'm guilty of the kerbing.

I know some lease firms offer a pre-assessment where they'll inspect the vehicle and tell you how much it would cost you to hand it back in the condition it's in, therefore giving you the option to get the work done yourself; but VWFS DO NOT offer this, so I'll only find out how much I'll be penalised after handing it over to BCA.

The car's in with a repairer at the moment getting the front wing fixed after a van drove into the side of when it pulling out of an adjacent parking space (it happened in the carpark at one of the offices of my client and I was walking back to the car after a meeting - literally saw it happen right in front of me..).

While it's in with them I wondered about paying for the other dents etc to be sorted at the same time, and they've quoted me £1310+VAT including refurb of the wheels, or £830+VAT for bodywork only.

The work they've quoted for is a mix of moderate scratches and dents, all larger than would be accepted under the industry fair wear & tear guidelines:

    Repair:
    NSR wing

    Paint:
    NSF wing
    OSF door
    NSR wing
    OSR door
    Blend NSR door

    Specialist:
    OSR wing dent removal
    4 x diamond cut alloys

I don't have photos showing the extent of the dents etc unfortunately, but never having leased before so no previous experience to compare with, just wondered what general thoughts on here were about best option?

Difficult to say really without seeing pictures, when I handed my last lease back there was a small dent I was expecting to get charged for but never did. If the dents and scratches are minor it may be cheaper to have one of the mobile repair companies do it.

I rent mine through Evogo and they have their own bodyshop which has really reasonable rates so I always use them and pay for it myself, whilst taking cars back at end of contract I’ve seen 3 horror stories with customers who have used cheap bodyshops and they’ve ended up paying again as the repair was so poor.

The repairer is one all the insurance companies use so I'd hope the work would be up to scratch (no pun), but food for thought.

No way would I repair. I handed back a Skoda (same group) with two scuffed diamond cut alloys and a third that was scrap. Really badly gouged. And a palm sized dent in a front wing. I reversed into it with my pick up. Total bill from memory £120

My brother owns a body shop and to repair the wing would have cost £120 itself

I always had my doubts about damage at hand back, so far no fees over three rentals.
My Mrs Sportage went back with scuffs, curb damage & nasty vertical mark on front bumper, grill, splitter from rolling into the house, don’t ask.
Again all covered under fair wear & tear.

Thanks all, think I’ll hold fire then and keep my fingers crossed when I hand it back.

Interesting, I'm about to hand my Renault back (thankfully) and have a cracked brake light housing. I assumed they would charge me a fortune to replace it, so I ordered the part second hand from eBay at £95 and will get a local mechanic to fit it. Would it really have been covered by fair wear and tear? Renault are just awful to deal with.

My wife did that too. Has yours also been hit by a multi-story car park that pulled out on her?

Not that bad but mobile skip would be a good description.
