    Time to say farewell...

To a couple of old friends.

It's been a bit of a year - skin cancer in January followed by redundancy one week after lockdown but, as anybody who knows me will tell anybody who cares to listen, I don't let these things get me down.

There are downsides, however, and a new job has caused me to re-focus on what's important.

To support a possible change of pace, I'm off-loading some old tat. This thread is purely to celebrate a couple of pieces of this old tat which are currently at a dealer being valued and which, I fear, have graced my wrist for the last time. In trying to move on, I'm convincing myself that a nice new quartz jobby will be far more me, far more accurate and won't need any special mollycoddling and so, as of now, these are just worthless relics of the past...

    First, the boxes...

    Untitled by d1ck_browne, on Flickr

    and...

    Untitled by d1ck_browne, on Flickr

Then the contents. Load of Swiss rubbish...

    Untitled by d1ck_browne, on Flickr

    Untitled by d1ck_browne, on Flickr

Both my birth year - 1968, and practically worthless. Probably fake too, now I come to think about it. If the bezel inserts seem a little bit skewy, that's becasue they're just loose-laid on some non-genuine inserts I bought from Cousins when I acquired the watches, because I didn't want to damage the originals. Don't know why I bothered. It's not as if I even like the stupid watches. Or watches at all...

I'll just be happy to see the back of them.

I'm more than happy to take these worthless items and re-home them. My wife will vouch that I seem to have endless capacity for watch tat.

You'll be glad to get rid of those things. A nice radio-controlled solar Casio is what you need now, the perfect antidote to antiquated clockwork trash.

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate year, hope better times are ahead for you. Certainly puts things into perspective.
No doubt your tat will soon be forgotten about and something else will be on your wrist that will make you smile.

Sell watches when you need to. Not when you think you need to.

I think you’re going to regret this down the line.

Sorry to hear about all of this! I think for the vast majority of people would agree that 2020 won’t be counting...

Sad to see two nice pieces go but completely understandable! Wishing you well

Get a casio multi band 6.

In the UK we are blessed to be very close to one of the few towers on earth so can enjoy some of the most accurate wrist watches in the world.

The closer to the towers the closer your watch is to the atomic clocks i believe due to lag over distance or whatever.

I really hope you're ok now.

Sounds like a tough free months but hopefully things will get better for you. We on this forum do live in a strange watch bubble world but no doubt the valuations you receive will demonstrate the up side of having enjoyed this hobby for some time so spend at least some of the funds in creating a genuinely happy memory.

Lots of lovely quartz watches out there for a few hundred quid so still plenty to interest you. All the best.

Sorry to hear of your recent crappy time.

Sometimes stuff like that gives you a different perspective.

I'm sure you will do well with the sale and hope a nice inexpensive quartz will fill the void.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Sorry to hear of your difficult times, but at the end of the day people and health are far more important. Stay strong.

Oh, and there's an awful lot of technology in quartz watches, and even the less expensive ones will be more accurate than both your clockwork jobbies.
    Best Regards - Peter

I'd hate to be with you when you're on your own.

Really nice watches. But that is all they are. When the apocalypse comes they will be worthless trinkets. Hopefully you have better times ahead

Having lost my father to cancer last year it really made me rethink the actual value of things.
I could g give a toss what you drive or what watch you wear - if you’re “telling” me - you’re trying too hard.

    Your health is your wealth

I left a very well paid job to have far less stress for half the salary

Rejigged the last two of three years on the mortgage and I’m a lot happier.

A couple or three hundred for a watch - yep
Would I buy a Rolex again? Who knows - but I doubt it.

You’ll be happier knowing you’re healthy and you have funds on tap to put a smile on your face or secure your future and any health events

Good luck and well done on your fight
You’re IMO doing the right thing - why is it right?
Because you say it is buddy

Thanks everyone. It seems like I may be holding onto these for a short while longer. I spoke to the two dealers who were considering them yesterday and, whilst I didn’t expect anything like retail for them, I was mildly surprised that neither dealer was, shall we say, totally open with me.

The first was probably the most straightforward, he had the watches in hand and almost said what I was almost expecting. The valuation he put on them was around what I had thought would be fair, given the overheads of a dealer, the need for a warranty and so forth, but reading between the lines of the conversation, he didn’t have that amount of free cash hanging around and would let me know if he heard of anybody looking for watches of this type. Fair enough, but it was a long-winded conversation to get to this point and I would have been perfectly ok with that as a straightforward explanation.

The second dealer was far more interesting. He told me that in the past week he had had 8 or 9 people offer him 1968 5513’s and had actually bought one for around half the retail price, with box and papers... I’m not sure what I made of that.

Still, they are both back in the safe for now whilst I consider my next move. The reality is that at least one of these, alongside my reasonably modern Railmaster and my 1964 Seamaster 300 165-014 will all need to be sold in the near future.

Anybody know a dealer who is buying at the moment?

Very sorry to hear about the “bumps in the road”, a personal nightmare of mine simply because once they are sold, there is no coming back.

Regarding selling, have you considered on the auction houses? Phillips and Fellows spring to mind. Yes I know that there is a sellers commission, but it might be worth paying in order to get a better price. Also have you given Mike Wood and Jason a ring to see if they are interested.

Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

This thread bummed me out because it's clear that these watches are important to you. Really sorry to hear the troublesome year you've had.

Hope your health has returned (or shortly returns) to good order, that's the most important thing. On the bright side you've had the opportunity to spend time with some great watches and you never know what the future may hold

p.s. the second dealer sounds like an opportunistic charlatan!

Thanks everyone - skin cancer isn’t really that serious - I had some lumps cut out and I’m pretty certain there won’t be any reoccurrence. I caught it early so it hadn’t spread.

As for the job, I’m back in work now but at a massively reduced salary.

There are a couple of lessons I learnt from this years shenanigans.

Firstly, take the sun seriously. I’m a little thin up top (about the only place I am in him!) so I wear a hat whenever the sun is out. That isn’t enough, it appears. Melanoma is mainly a consequence of sun-caused skin damage, despite the fact that my head and ears are always covered, I should also have been wearing a decent spf. Also, cloud cover doesn’t stop UV.

Secondly, if you have a lump that keeps bleeding with the smallest provocation (literally it would start to bleed when I was just sitting on the sofa in the evening and it would bleed without even being touched) then get it checked out and get it checked quick. I saw the doc on the Monday, was supposed to be flying to Mexico on the following Sunday, but I was in hospital seeing a specialist on the Wednesday in between. Before I’d returned home after that appointment, the hospital was on the phone booking an appointment for me to have my op on the Friday. I missed Mexico (blessing!) but the consequences of postponing the op could have been serious. The NHS takes it seriously and so should you (we!).

Lesson number 3 was that things are just that - things. There are more important things than things. Life will become simpler for us in the near future and that’s why I’m scaling back.

So, thank you for your best wishes, everyone, but the truth is that I don’t see any of this as a problem - it’s an opportunity, a chance to reconnect with what’s important. I’ve come a long way, much further than I ever could have imagined. It’s time to say enough is enough and enjoy what we’ve achieved as a family.

My best wishes to you also. Watches come and go, but health and happiness can never be compared to or linked to wrist trinkets.

Sorry to hear of all your bad luck. Hopefully 2021 will be a corker of a year for you, if your Swiss tat needs a new home they can come and live with my little old Enicar with the bent crown tube which keeps on ticking merrily along.
