A New Series of Spitting Image.

Can I ask you to keep this non political, but how do you feel about the come back of Spitting Image.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-49865406

I liked Spitting Image in its early days and I have a Fluck and Law Maggie Thatcher Teapot and a Ronald Reagan Coffee pot on my mantlepiece. However I thought it got a bit too personal at the end. Making people look really ugly was a step too far for me.

What worries me is that unlike the first time, we are in the age of the internet and I can see it trying to outdo the nastiness and trolling that seems to be part and parcel of social media.

I have mixed feelings about it.

I think when it came out it was very relevant and very funny for its time. I don’t think it would be relevant or funny now.

Also I can imagine that 70% of the screen time would be Trump and Johnson in a similar manner to the two David’s (Steel and Owen). The other 30% would be Prince Andrew and Harry/Megan and they probably couldn’t do what they would want to do anyway.

    Interesting!

I was a bit young to understand much of it 1st time around and didn't see much of it. If I had to guess, it will be a flop and/or completely neutered despite there being vast opportunity. This might be the only significant positive to Trump being in power, oh the possibilities!

I feel compelled to say that I've never met a nice South African, except ofc Breyten Breytenbach.

As it is part of the BBC subscription service (BritBox) I will give it a miss

paying the licence fee is quite enough for me

I would be surprised if it could adapt to the offended generation and be funny.

Back in the time of Spitting image V:1 the country really needed satire, to laugh at the absurd, to get people talking and make people think, there were poets, song writers, pop groups and film makers making a racket about the stupidity of the system as it was, if ever we needed that again - it's now.

Maybe, just maybe, they'll throw caution to the wind and go risqué like the original; one can hope.

With all the matters where “I’m offended” is used to close down discussion, I’m hoping their brand of satire might just be what society needs. If they can stand firm against the Twitter mob....

In this day and age there is no way the BBC would portray someone like Trevor McDonald reading the Ten O'Clock news from a petrol station whilst smoking a joint, or have Philip Schofield dancing around singing "I'm not a bender!".

Spitting Image was never on the BBC. It was on ITV

Spitting Image was usually a double edged sword, nobody was safe, left or right.
I doubt the same would be true today with so many ‘untouchables’.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

Spitting Image these days wouldnt be the same, there would be non stop complaints so it would be toned down to a different show completely

Hopefully they go after left and right or it will be a bit boring.

I doubt these days if it will go as close to the bone as it used to. Bo Selector and Craig David, Spitting Image and David Steele spring to mind. In the present day they would probably sue.

Probably best to actually watch it before judging it's style and content.

Very much looking forward to it, interested to see whether they can make it acerbic and satirical enough to be effective in light of how extreme political/social reality has become...there's definitely plenty to go at, hopefully they'll ignore the twitterati or better yet lampoon the social meeja phenomenon along with all the rest.

I'd like to see it but I'm fearful that all the Snowflake/Woke/Antifa/SJW/BLM/Me Too/Bi/Whatevers would limit the content to the extent that it would just bore me.

You have quite a list of groups who's views you obviously disagree with.

Interesting thought - I would have thought that those people are pretty much the audience being pandered to.

The new series is on Britbox, so no one will see it anyway.

And that's before you get to the Karen, Kevin and the rest of the Gulag Gammons!

Indeed, I expect that they'll mostly turn off the programme, a satirical look at our situation probably won't be very welcome.
