Looking a buying 2004/05 v70
Seen both a petrol and a diesel. Does anyone have or own the above
Wondering which one is the Most desirable
Only do about 6000m a year
Want it to be reliable and smooth above all else

I read somewhere recently that for this type of older Volvo, your best bet in terms of reliability and longevity, is a petrol engine and manual gearbox. Certainly at 6k miles a year, fuel efficiency isn't a huge concern. The manual gearbox version isn't too common though.
Still running a 2.4 V70 auto that's coming up 20 years old, current mileage 112,000 only use it for the Yorkshire to Mallorca via Barcelona run these days, eats the miles with seats that are still brilliant even compared to current cars, local independent garage does the service work, TBH there's not a lot to dislike.
Now and then think about replacing it - but why and what with?

At 6000 miles a year petrol is definitely the way to go.
The whole world hates diesel now and in a few years you will struggle to take it into any major town/city without a charge of some kind.
Road tax will probably be higher and servicing costs will definitely be higher, also diesel engines doing low miles will invariably have maintenance issues with all the associated nonsense such as egr valve dpf filters etc.
I wouldn't be surprised if diesel was more expensive to buy in the first place.

I have a 5 year old Honda Civic Diesel and it averages 66 mph and is totally 100% reliable. It's so clean I pay zero tax.
D5 or 2.4D diesel with manual gearbox. Auto gearbox is problematic on these. Go on forever and diesel easier to resell. I did 90,000 problem free miles in a D5 manual XC90 and loved it to bits.
At this market level, is resale a consideration? The thing I read (perhaps on PisonHeads?) also suggested that the D4 was a better bet than the D5.
Edit: While I think of it, the MOT history website is an invaluable free aid in telling you what to look at for a particular car. For example consider this V70 and it's history:

I had the 2.4 diesel diesel on an auto box, bought used approved from Volvo 3 years old with 120,000 miles on the clock! (It was cheap!) - had it for 3 years, never had any issues apart from having to replace the headlight bulbs every year and a new battery after 3. Was quick, smooth but not particularly economical if I remember correctly. If I was doing 6000 miles a year I’d choose petrol though tbh
6k a year, seek out the 163bhp black engine cover version no dpf and no swirl flaps.
I remember having some serious fun with an auto 850 T5 estate in the mid 90s, total Q car.

Yes it is, the PH2 cars are fantastically durable,comfortable and capable, massive turning circle tho.I currently have a PH3 car and its decent but not as well built as the earlier ones.

It’s a 2004 one I’m looking. No history though with it apparently
I've got a 2005 D5 with the black top engine currently on about 123,000.
It's a great car, comfortable, spacious and does what I need it to, I can sleep full length in the back with the seats down if I need to and its swallows pretty much anything we need moving. We do less than 8,000 miles a year.
When it comes to replacement time, we'll probably stick with a V70 but I'd go for the petrol version to get a little more performance for pulling out of junctions etc and more ease of access. I can't drive it into London any more and I can see more cities will go that way banning diesels as well.
Totally depends on usage.
If you are doing lots of miles on the motorway then diesel is a no brainer.
If you go anywhere near London or certain other city centers, or do lots of short journeys then petrol is the one to get.
