    Dress watch recommendations

    Hi all,

Looking to purchase a nice dress watch for my younger brothers 25th birthday.

The budget is up to £400

Any recommendations - current options I have considered include the Seiko Presage and Tissot Le Locle

Thanks in advance for the help!

    Best,
    Akash

This Mido Chronograph is an absolutely stonking bargain, even if £80 overbudget:

    TKM are reliable IME.

Is vintage an option? If so there are lots of vintage dress watch options available within budget from the likes of Longines and Omega. Bit of a minefield though so caveat emptor!

A lot less than budget but Orient Bambino. Maybe vintage Omega...

    The new baby Speedbird perhaps..

Dressy, yet rugged enough for daily wear.

Yep vintage would definitely work only concern would be where to start, to find a reliable piece. Will take a look into this now :)

Seiko cocktail time could be a nice choice. It’s not the smallest so wrist size matters but put it on a different strap and it can fit many occasions. Looking at the age a bit and - not knowing the wearer - this has some interesting features (dial, dome).

    Dress watch recommendations

Hamilton Intra-Matic. Silver, Black or Fume dial options.

Preowned you would be in budget or here’s a brand new black dial 38mm version for £480 (rrp £725) using code EXTRA25.

Seiko Lord Marvel, should be able to get a good example around that price. From memory they’re 35mm, depends on whether he’s up for a vintage sized watch...

Failing that, the Hamilton above is a solid suggestion

If they are happy with that kind of size / thickness, the Seiko Cocktail Time (now a Pressage) is beautiful and gets another vote from me.

The stock strap would put many off though, so would benefit from changing before gifting !

Both Hamilton’s seem fantastic and as does the Seiko! He has worn my Tido black bag and it fits well - so I’m assuming he’s about a medium wrist size and largely all of the above should work?

Just looked further into this and it’s probably a ideal. Any recommendations on a replacement strap?

    Dress watch recommendations

It can take quite a few, depends on the look you are shooting for. Basically depends a bit if you want to dress up or down. I have a blue Hirsch for it, a Brown Darlena woodland and a grafter in brown.

Also I actually like the black strap it comes on. It is not a poor strap like on the green alpinist. The strap looks mounted upside down, so as not to show the strap tip while sipping your cocktail ;-).

For inspiration Instagram has great pics as well.

As said above it's pretty versatile strap wise. Its pictured above on a buffalo leather strap https://www.ukwatchstrap.co.uk/Rios-...Black-AU4.html. I think a strap with a bit of texture makes it more versatile, for dressing up and down.

I should have said the Seiko strap is nicely made, just a bit polarising astetically. Its very patent and a bit stiff. Some love it, some...don't.

For the watch minded, thats just a good excuse to play with straps. If your brother isn't so inclined strap changes might seem like an obstacle and put a dampner on the unwrapping. I suppose you could include a second strap option in the package - best of both!

Thanks all for the recommendations and advice - both on the watch and the strap! Hugely helpful and just made the purchase for the Seiko!

Well chosen Dr Akash! Hope it goes down well. It’s a handsome watch and represents decent value.
