    250th Post Giveaway

    Hi all,

For my 250th post, I am giving away my early 1990s Swiss Army Officers Quartz Chronograph.

I bought this on eBay in 2017. It is running, but the battery may be near end of life. The strap was new then, and only has light wear.

The matt case with polished bezel is about 38mm, not including the crown or pushers. The lug width is 19mm, and the lugs are drilled. Lug tip to lug tip is about 46mm, and thickness is 10mm. It has a flat mineral crystal.

The chrono has a central seconds hand, 30-minute and 12-hour subdials, and a date subdial with a quick set button on the side of the case. It does not have a running seconds hand.

From advertisements, I think this watch dates to about 1991 to 1993. I have seen later examples with numerals replacing the hour markers. Actor Rob Morrow who played doctor Joel Fleischman wore this earlier version in the spring 1993 episodes of Northern Exposure.

Based on recent listings, I think this watch has a value of about £100. To enter a random drawing for this watch with free shipping from the US, just leave a comment below, and I will announce the winner in early August.

I am asking if you win the watch but later decide you no longer want it, that you either post it as a free drawing on TZ-UK, or you donate it to a TZ-UK charity raffle or auction. Is that fair?

I have very much enjoyed being here on TZ-UK, and thought this would be a fun way to show my appreciation. Thank you to everyone here, especially to Eddie for making this possible.

On to the photos, and good luck!

    Mike, aka @williemays

Great gesture. Count me in but if I’m the random fella you choose I’d like it to go to the fundraiser to raise money for that.

Great gesture OP. What does the little button on the non-crown side do?

The button advances the date pointer on the bottom subdial.

Here is a Worn & Wound post with YouTube video about a similar version:

Very nice gesture Mike - I would happily enjoy wearing your watch for a while. It wouldn't be a keeper for me but I would absolutely 'pay it forward' after wearing it.

Thanks, @Devonian. I am starting to wonder though whether this watch would be an effective fundraising incentive...

Just noticed that price in the 1992 advert, $650! I wonder what that is in 2020 with inflation. Ah google tells me it’s $1,211.

Good for you Mike. Definitely has a ‘90s look to it and even better on that strap.

Really decent gesture - your terms of ownership are perfectly acceptable, count me in.

Here are images from the TV series Northern Exposure, "Kaddish, for Uncle Manny," Season 4, Episode 22, which aired 3 May 1993. I think Rob Morrow had been wearing the same chrono on the show in late 1992, as well.

Still a few more days to comment on this post to enter the free random drawing. If you have commented already, you are in. Cheers!

I think it is fair to say that if I won the watch, the very least I would do is make a donation to the TZ-UK fundraiser. One nice gesture deserves another.

Very kind gesture and great forum spirit. That watch case has a bit of an Ebel look about it. With my smaller wrists I'd be delighted for a chance to take ownership for a while. Thanks

The Fleischman has landed! I really like it, and it certainly doesn't look thirty-odd years old. Huge thanks to Mike for giving it away and sending it all the way from Dubuque.
