My first ever visit to a football game was Jack Charlton’s testimonial match, Leeds United versus Celtic at Elland Road on 7th May 1973. My brother supported Leeds and Celtic were my team. Celtic won 4-3. Big Jack managed to be a legend at Leeds, Middlesbrough and then with Eire. God bless him.

Few achieved as much in both playing and management. His work with ROI was quite astonishing.

Oh no! Very sad news. I giant of football and a legend around these parts. I saw him in Tesco last year and he looked very frail.

Straight talking football legend. I remember him as a manager more than a player in my generation, of course new of him to be the fantastic player he was. But 94 world cup, remember him going ballistic because the ref wouldn't let his player stop for water in the heat, his press conferences were funny but he was astute.

RIP Big Jack. Another of the 66 gang passes. His work with the Republic’s team in the 90s was immense.

A life story that could be from a blockbuster film, he turned down a trial at Leeds to go and work with his dad down the pit, but he soon came to his senses with help from mum. The Milburns were his uncles on his mums side and 4 of them were professional footballers so it was his destiny really. Won virtually every cup there was to win back in the day, a giant of a man, literally. RIP Jackie.

    Real life football great .
Had a knack of standing on the keepers toes when attacking a corner . Little wonder he scored so many .
His post match interviews were one of the main reasons to watch Ireland in the World Cup .

End of an era, I have great memories of Italia 90 and USA 94, fabulous atmosphere in Ireland during those times and really lifted the country out of the doldrums. Unfortunately my kids will probably never experience that sort of collective bonding and excitement across the country when Big Jack was in charge.

If there was any justice a giant statue of him should be erected in the middle of O'Connell Street instead of that disgusting Spire.

Big Jack was the manager at the first Sheffield Wednesday game I went to - Boxing day 1979. Sheffield Wednesday 4 Sheffield United 0.

    What a game.

When I was a young lad fishing at Worsborough Reservoir, a voice said "have you caught anything lad?" I looked round and it was Jack.

    RIP Jack Charlton.

+1 Jon, I’m old enough to remember the great Leeds side from the early 70s. Different era completely, Leeds were renowned for being robust but they could play a bit too. Its ironic that 3 of that team have died recently.

Leeds did the business today at Swansea (just), fingers crossed for the next 3 games.

They need a maximum of four points from the last three games, they should going this time but given their image ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, I’ll be behind the sofa with you!
