Whether a date window is attractive or an abomination is all about the care taken. When it’s as well executed as this, I love it

I now realise why I've never liked date windows at 6:

Quite like them at 6, something different.
Hear hear :)
(and, here here: https://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.p...oss-123-Geneva).
I quite like some catflaps and I still have a few:
Works on my NOMOS:
Looks good on my Breitling
Actually it's the easiest way to tell if its 46 or 42
I’m ok with it .
I had to check my wrist, at 6 and happy enough.
I don’t mind a date at 6. Now a pointer date, that really annoys me.
132 watches over 10 yrs or so and the only one I've owned that had a date at 6.
Steinhart Marine 38 (well gone)
Could be much much worse........
I really like a date window at size as I think it balances the dial much better
Quite like a date at 2
And the date at 6 on my 46mm SOH says Hi

Date at 3 < Date at 6 < Date at 4 - for toolwatches and divers at least.
Date at 4 is - basically - the patrician choice, but must:
1. align with the crown
2. the date numerals must align perpendicular to the horizontal axis of the watch face
3. the date window must be round, not the usual, jarring oblong
4. the date disc background must match the dial colour (duh... obviously...)
5. the date window should not be too close to the centre of the watch just 'cos accounts decided an off-the-shelf date disc was cheaper.
Of course, being a hypocrite, not a single watch that I own does this...
Not one.
Dammit!
Not sure anything out there actually ticks all the boxes - and if something does, it'll probably be gopping in every other way...
Glashütte Original SeaQ Panorama Date ticks the greatest number of boxes that I can recall (plus it's just gorgeous . . . big date is a bonus, too) -
I much prefer it to a date at 4:30 and not straight!

The Glashütte is really 4:30.
I completely agree regarding your point on the alignment of dates at 4 but I wear my watches on the right wrist, and always assumed there to be a readability gain for radially-aligned date wheels displaying at 4 when worn on the left wrist, as it would mean the arm doesn’t need to be bent so far to read the date?
By which I mean, I can’t wear something like this as I would need to get my arm dislocated before I could read off the date horizontally, but if worn on the left wrist this watch would reward even the most indolent of elbow movements with a clear date view.
Of course, that doesn’t mitigate the niggling feeling that the date wheel hasn’t been printed with due consideration to its guichet - in which case, as you were ;)
Another at 6 still in the collection...
And a few long gone, but also look great at 6:
...and one that has the date at 2, which is not too shabby...
I quite like them :0)
If at 4:30 got to be horizontal IMO
But I do like at 12
A large part of it is the aesthetics, yes. But picture that Zenith on your right wrist, and think about where you need to move your arm to before the date is horizontal to your line of site, versus how much more comfortably, and with minimal movement, the date can be read if your left wrist.
Or even a Pointer!! (especially if it has the Day and the Month) :0)
Much prefer the date at the six o’clock marker, it adds to the overall balance of the dial.
Date at 2
Just to be contrary.

I must say I am pretty neutral on the position of the date, as long as it’s not at 2 or 4, however my biggest bugbear are dates that you cannot read easily either because of the font Used or just being microscopic.
The date on my wife’s Cartier Santos is tiny, resulting in her asking me what the date it. Not a problem unless I am wearing my 5513, but sort of defeats the point.
Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

A round window wouldn't work well with a big date display, true, but for the usual sizing I'd prefer it in a lot of cases. Depends upon overall dial aesthetic to an extent.
I can live with wonky, if I must, but prefer the way it's been done on the 556 - indeed, it's odd they've done it that way for the cheaper watch, but not the pricier model! Of course they have failed to place the crown at 4 / 4.30, so definitely curate's-eggy overall...
Should have added to my original rant/list:
6. F-off with your cyclops!
That is near-perfect
Word-of-the-day
You posted that twice.
It did not become any less of an incoherent mess...
So I did, and no it didn't - I still like it though.
Has anyone posted the MCC Offshore? If so I'll do it again:
I usually loathe day / date next to each other, it's all a bit seiko 5 or obviously a 7750 - it also cramps the dial, especially on 40mm and lower diameters. The above though is executed fantastically well.
Dislike date windows at 6 except for chronos where the sundials are perfectly lined up left and right and the date window at 6 means the dial looks neat and symmetrical otherwise I dislike most 6 a clock dates
No-one's mentioned 1:30 yet, these are surprisingly popular on TZ (don't like the double date window either): -
Why do so many makers insist on putting ugly, clunk frames on date windows? The above is a great example of the sin - no frames on the subdials, nor the moonphase - but the date - yep, straight out of Anglian Windows' chunkiest UPVC-stylebook...
It makes the discordant effect so much the worse for emphasis. Mind, most HH is damned clever and wonderfully-worked, but the design budget must be negligible (quick glance at what they were doing 10 years ago - "Yep, let's do that again, near enough...").
'pon reflection... if Meistersinger can do it for the hour, why the hell not put a big date in a circular window - provided it works with the overall aesthetic.
I actually really like this watch...
Date at 4.30. At 4.30.

I quite like the date at 6 - but have watches with the date at 3 & 4:30 that I also like.
I guess if I like the watch - I’m not really fussed about date position...
