    iPhone slowdown

I remember reading a year or two ago about Apple apparently slowing down their phones once they were so old. Think they may have admitted it. Not sure if the updates caused this.

Well I could be wrong but my wife and I have had our 8 pluses for just over two years (May 2018) and both of us have noticed in the last few weeks that our phones seem to take a lot longer to charge and the battery life seems to last a lot less. Spooky this seems to have happened once we’d had them for two years - coincidence, shenanigans or are we imagining it?

Doubt we will be changing them soon as they actually work fine and looking at new ones, they all seem to be 3 year contracts for similar money to what we were paying for two year ones last time. Curious that’s all.

Apple recieved a fine for this and they claim it is not a practice they do anymore. That said with each release of IOS there is always degradation in performance because it has more features that take up more memory and processing power. The 8 uses an A11 Bionic chip and that is used in the 10 as well, 11's are on now to the A13.

So if the new update is geared towards the processing power of the A13, then yes unfortunately you will see degradation, but it shouldn't be significant.

Thanks, that makes sense. Slowdown isn’t huge, more the charging and battery life which we can live with. Anyway no doubt they’ll soon be on iPhone 53 the way the seem to release them :-)

That's just your battery capacity dropping after your 2 years of usage, which is normal for any battery. My 7plus (just under 3yrs old) battery health has just dipped below 90%, once it's down to 85% I'll take it to an Apple store for a new battery and expect another 1-2 years out of it before getting a new device. Performance wise the phone is as quick as I need it to be.

I have noticed the same as the OP with my XS Max. I seem to need to charge up twice a day now to keep it going before it hits the red 20%. Battery is running at 98% capacity so that is not the issue.

I may wipe it and do a re-install - but it’s now a pain with the verification and bank apps where you have to take care

I have a 7 plus as well as an 8 plus and have really noticed the battery issue over the last couple of weeks. Honestly thought it was an age thing with the phones. Glad I'm not the only one. The slowdown, I haven't noticed but I do ensure I close any open apps periodically.

I buy sim free so I need at least 3 years out of an iPhone to make it viable for me.

    Cheers,

    J

That does look like something's draining your battery in the background. My 7plus I mentioned will be 3yrs old come Sept, and until earlier this year the battery had been at 93%. It's now down to 88% and I've put this further reduction down to a greatly increased use during the lockdown via Walkmeter when out for my now daily stroll, and increasing my podcast/radio/music listening using bluetooth headphones, all degrading the capacity of an "old" battery. Even so I still get a day to a day and a half out of it.

I have an 8 plus and noticed very sluggish apps, switched it off and back on again just last night to see if that improves things.

The other thing I’ve noticed is that cables that used to charge the phone ok now no longer work, come up with the this accessory may not be supported and refuse to charge.

It’s probably Apple Music causing the battery drain. It’s a well documented fault.

Some good tips here for preserving battery life. Interesting is the charging to 80% and not dropping below 20%. Dark themes are good to use too.

Good tips by Rod there. Worth looking at what's using your location services and what you have background app refresh enabled for.

Charged up my old iphone4 recently for the hell of it. God, it feels so obsolete now and slow. It’s amazing how fast technology is moving.

The latest update to iOS optimises charging so that the phone isn’t charged up in one go when it is plugged in at night. The phone learns when you usually unplugs it in the morning then charges up so that it sits at 80% until an hour or so before normal wakeup time.

Well I dropped my phone out of my car and smashed both sides. Local place that’s fixed lots of phones have said repairing the front is £70 but they’ve said they can’t repair the back as it’s more specialist. Guess it could be £200 or more to fix which leads me to consider a new one.

I like the size of the 8 plus and wouldn’t want to go smaller, so I’m wondering whether to jump to an 11 pro or wait until the 12 comes out and hope the 11 drops in price!

The idea that Apple purposefully slow down phones to get you to buy new ones is a bit of a conspiracy theory, albeit one the EU and a few other places are happy to indulge. What was actually happening was that due to batteries degrading over time, as they all do and not just Apple’s, they wrote something into the OS to make sure it would only use as much power as the battery could manage. This kept the battery life up and stopped them shutting down suddenly when the power was low and you tried to do something demanding. Their mistake was not explaining this properly in the first place, leading people to think it was planned obsolescence. The alternative would have been battery life decreasing drastically after a couple of years. The solution is simply to get a new battery fitted, which is a lot cheaper than getting a new phone. There’s a ‘battery health’ feature in settings, and >80% seems to be a good idea if you want it to run like new. It’s also helpful to use the low power mode setting if you’re running out of juice, and turning down the brightness of the screen helps too.

Well one phone call to O2 (been with for 13 years) and asked about an 11 pro. Got offered £52 a month with no upfront. Said I’d been offered better elsewhere - BANG £45 a month because ‘I’m authorised to give up to £260 discount’. I then established that if I get the phone, pay off the device part, I can then switch contracts and save another £6 on that. So in 10 minutes it’s gone effectively from £52 to £39!

Will do some more research before I commit but quite like the 11 pro max size.

Devonian, I would fix the front, put it in a case so you can't see the back, and wait for the 12.

If you intend to keep your new phone for a while the new iPhones will likely be 5g compatible. Although it's not widely available yet you'll at least be able to use it in the future.

Instead of waiting for the 12, I decided to go for the 11 pro max, which I’m very happy with. I claimed on my bank insurance and paid a £75 excess and got a brand new front an back on my 8 plus so phone looks almost totally brand new.

Looking to sell it, some of these companies are offering up to £250 online, anyone got any experience of them? Mine is locked to o2 so I guess that’s about £20 to get unlocked. O2 buys them back but even the sales person on the phone said to go elsewhere.

    Hi.
When I need to upgrade with O2 I go to my online account around a month before the end of the 2 years contract and fill in the unlock form on there.
It's free to do if on a contract ,has worked for my last 3 iPhones and takes a few days if that.
I did read, but may be dreaming, but since a few years ago iPhones came unlocked but that might have been from carphone warehouse?

With an ageing battery you either get reduced battery capacity (standby) or a slower iPhone, Apple used to make that decision for it's customers but after people complained of shenanigans they updated the iOS so you have the choice. I think it's in Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Once the battery starts deteriorating then you should see a toggle to set either "longer standby but slower iPhone" or "shorter standby but normal performance iPhone".

Then it's your call as to which you want, but that's probably the point you want to consider either a replacement battery or new iPhone.

This thread is interesting, I have a two year old I phone 7plus, prior to the last software update the battery lasted about two days, I updated it and now it doesn't manage a day, it also get warm now, I don't believe in coincidences

I have had the exact same problem with two 7plus Iphone's . Both used to last a day and half to two days before needing charged, now both are lasting less than a day and also they seem to be a lot hotter on the case back ???? Spooky coincidence ????? I don't think so, something appears to have changed !
    Cheers

My 7plus worked perfectly until I'd had it for @ 22-23 months then one day it just blacked out, dead, felt quite warm on the back. Luckily Vodafone give a 2yr warranty so it went away for 5 working days and came back perfect again. It was in the same perfect condition as going in (my phones get a glass screen protector and Spigen case on before I use them) and has (touch wood) been fine since. I never found out what the fault was but suspected the battery. It'll be 3yrs old in Oct and I may upgrade then for 5g compatibility.

You can always get a new battery fitted for the price of a new phone....or one of your children's kidneys...

How much was your last phone? They're £49 and £69 depending on which model.
