Can anybody help identify and value a 1970’s (?) 18ct Patek Philippe

A friend of mine has been left a watch by his wife’s grandfather and never worn it. He also inherited a Daytona which he has worn and battered for 10 years and recently just had a full Rolex service, crystal, crown, bezel, pushers and not much change from £1600.

He’ll never wear this and obviously already has a heirloom to pass on so wishes to sell said Patek but at this moment in time (pun intended) he’s trying to ID the watch.

He isn’t a member here so won’t be trying to sell it but of course as his WIS friend he asked me to see what I could find out.

    Pics:-

Google shows some similar (different case shape) models under the Ellipse range but he’s drawn a blank as have I.

I think I saw an ad for this exact watch in a 70s national geographic magazine

Can’t help on the actual model number but looks like an Ellipse. Asking prices for these seem to be ranging from £5k up to over £15k on chrono24 but they are very dated now and not that popular so I would expect it to sell at the lower end of that range, especially if it’s sold to a dealer.

That’s gorgeous - think it’s a 3856 so possibly had a quartz movement hiding inside. A lot of the value will be in the bracelet and dial combo which makes it a cracking looking watch.

A straight-on picture would be exceedingly helpful. Doesn't look like an ellipse from what we can see, given the squarish corners and angles at 3 and 6 (though the latter feature comes close to a 3858).

    I think it's a Gondolo, possibly a 3842.

    There's an example on Chrono24.

    Brilliant, thanks

Looks like £2500-5000 is it’s “value”

I’ve advised him to take the battery out and put it in the safe to keep. He’s considering it now.....
