Thread: Help with EDC folding knife keep losing them!

Help with EDC folding knife keep losing them!

I know many on here are knife fans! I have in recent years lost two le tieres compact knives, one nice Sheffield steel carbon blade and just recently a swiss army single bladed folding knife.

It seems like they slide out of my trouser/shorts pocket when sitting down especially in the car - so it would drop out of the door.

Obviously this can’t continue as nice knives are quite expensive! How can I keep my knife secure?

Pocket clip on side of knife.

Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

Help with EDC folding knife keep losing them!

Nearly £30 for a clip for an SAK!

    https://www.heinnie.com/clip-carry-swissqlip

SAK cases have a loop to thread a belt through. I have been warned that if I ever do this and walk around wearing an SAK on the hip, then I will be for the chop.

Make yourself a lanyard. I used micro paracord for convenience. You’ll have fun learning how to the tie the knots and have a useful length of cord with you in case you need to lash something together.

I find a slip with an exterior of suede keeps the knife secure and positioned correctly in my pocket. Clips can also be the cause of losses as they catch, such as on seatbelts.

The SAK clips are pretty punchy, but you can get dangler clips that act like a key chain which is what I use, so the SAK is suspended in pocket (snigger).

    A few options.
    1. But a really expensive knife, you’ll be checking it’s still there every few minutes.
    2. Buy 30 really cheap knives, you won’t care if you lose them.
    3. Bit of string, tie to knife and belt loop.
    4. A key chain, hook both ends.
    5. Buy trousers with deeper pockets.
    6. Pouch that clips to belt.

My two methods when they don't have pocket clips

I keep my larger (Bush) knives on an elasticated lanyard, handy when wearing shorts in rough country.
For uk legal knives I prefer a smaller slim knife that fits in to the watch pocket of jeans or can be stuck in my button up back pocket of shorts. e.g. SAK waiter.
I haven’t lost a knife for years but they do wear a hole in the jeans pocket.

Some good advice ! The expensive knife is a good idea but I have lost two “expensive” (to me) knives which had pouches - they did take longer to lose than the cheaper ones mind!

Anyone tried or recommend these? Has a pocket clip ! I usually like a traditional style so this looks a bit out there for me.

Hard to go wrong with a UKPK. Also check out the Urban and the Squeak for two smaller sizes.
    Spyderco make great knives.

Urban is my EDC. It’s great. I’m on the waiting list for Hennie’s version of the UKPK (it has a full metal back).

I have one of these...link...on my keyring instead of a fob. It's small but very useful.

In my pocket I usually carry this one...Amazon link. I haven't had a problem with it slipping out.

When I travel this one goes in my backpack...Amazon link...because who knows when you might need a corkscrew? I have to remember to move it into my checked luggage when flying.

If you wear jeans, chinos or the like, many small SAKs can be kept comfortably and securely in the watch pocket.

8.4cm blade length if it’s the CEO. Don’t think it UK legal to carry.

  22. #22
If you wear a belt & the knife has a bail, I find the Victorinox Multiclip good (they're on amazon).

If you get the one with the chain/ clip the knife fits into your pocket & the knife is detachable when you need it.

And it uses a different steel, CPM S30V rather than CTS BD1N. Here's a review/comparison of the two versions:

See this link...https://youtu.be/7RvP4A1tGeU?t=45...for a comparison of the steels.

Put it in the wallet, the Excelsior is slightly smaller even though it has two blades so maybe a better fit.

The non-locking UK carry one is a really well made piece of kit, with ball detent to hold open or closed. For the money it is superb.

It has a key ring on it too so could be secured to a chain/ cord

Easy to follow youtube videos take you through it in baby steps.

they are actually easy to do unless your talking really fancy ones.

If you want one made I know a guy on a knife forum who still makes and sells them if I remember.

I used to carry a UKPK, but switched to the Squeak. Both have pocket clips. The UKPK looks like a sword in comparison. I did lose the original Squeak though. I suspect that it caught on the drawcord of my jacket, then hooked out of my pocket. Someone got lucky that day.

The CKRT looks like a lovely knife OOK. I really can't justify any more knives though.

    Serious question

Why do you need to carry a knife? i have a Swiss Army in the car glovebox, one that’s part of the holiday kit but i have never needed to take a stone out of a horses hoof and that’s living in the country, whittle sticks or whatever one does with knife.
Do not get me wrong i appreciate a well made piece of kit but ?

Why do you carry a handkerchief when you haven't got a cold? Because it's useful?

Maybe you never want to cut something away from a habitation or your vehicle where you can find a suitable knife. However, some of us travel on buses and trains, I also go yachting, where I find it very convenient to use my knife to cut fruit, open packaging etc. I can even sort out a broken nail as my 84 mm SAK has a pair of scissors. Answer...they're useful.

I probably use a pocket knife half a dozen times a year. But I’d rather have one and not need it, than not have one and need it.
I’ve never needed to take a stone out of a horse’s hoof either as it happens.

I use it daily several times a day - for sharpening pencils, opening plastic packaging, opening post (letters and parcels) trimming things, cutting stuff! etc - for example, peeling an orange, when you have a little knife you can just score the skin and it’s a pleasure not a chore....why would you not need to carry a knife !

My grandad used to carry a swiss-army knife in his pocket so I have fond memories and always liked the idea as a kid of carrying one. However, I can't genuinely think of a situation when I've ever really regretted not carrying one. I can always either wait until I get home or find some kind of alternative if I ever come up against a situation where a pocket knife might be helpful. Similarly, in the RAF, I'd notice that a few colleagues would always strap non-issued Gerber knives to their webbing belt as soon as combat fatigues were worn despite being in desk jobs and I could never understand why. To me, a pen would be a much more useful thing to carry.

I carry a pocket knife AND a pen every day. It can be done.

[the pen is mightier than the sword! It’s not until you carry a pocket knife that you need it for everything, another cliche...you never miss it until it’s gone!
