Yes. It isn't a creature. It is a part of a creature. It has been discarded to throw predators off the scent.

A slow worm..... clearly not a fast worm or it would manage to take all its body with it.
No, it's a wasp. I should know, my father used to kill them for a living.
Have you seen Tremors? It's a baby one.

Something has scared a sloworm so much that it has shed its tail to distract the "predator" off the creature itself.
A large one at that.
They can only do this once, the tail stump does heal over, but does not grow back in a disposable form again, so it is always a shame if this primary defence mechanism is used when the sloworm is being handled by an over-inquisitive human.
Just don’t get it wet or feed it after midnight

If you want a few replacements alex, I will post some up, I have loads.
I found this on Alamy:
It's a slow worm tail.
And this is interesting – a slow worm skull:
That would be a dead slow worm - on several levels.
An ex-slow worm. It has ceased to be.

.... so not a Cockchafer then ...
Plant it in the garden and you will get spice, from which you can fold space.
Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.
