    New Beemer 4

    Finally ready for orders.
Just had a speculative email from BMW ref replacing my 4 series.
Would have bought one in a heartbeat....
    BUT....
Dear God.....wtf were they on when they OK'd that front grille.
Wondering if it'll grow on me....but for now, I'm keeping my 2017.

Ime just hoping the M3 isn’t adorned with the same monstrosity, if so I will be keeping my old one.

It won’t grow on you. It’s hideous. People should be fired.

I bought a new M4, had it for two years and loved it. The wife did too. Now we have a child I was seriously thinking of getting a similar deal on the new M4......but no. It really is a face only it’s designer could love.

I saw all the renders & never believed that is was going to be true until I saw it Monday. Quite frankly the most shocking front end I have seen.

Bangle got some unfair abuse about designs that have aged really well, such as the E85 Z4. This is just a different league of WTF.

When I saw the pictures a few weeks ago, I thought it was someone doing a mockup, to make fun of the recent BMW design.... then I saw the car.

I can't believe that someone signed off on that. I think they'll be doing a facelift very quicky. But on the other hand, I bet that this years M4 is going to be silly cheap soon.

I imagine that it will sell very well. Certain brand names have a way of clouding customers vision.

The rest of the car looks good, but I do think that grille is badly misjudged. It's just too big, too dominant and is pretty much the only thing you see. It doesn't fit the rest of the car.
So clever my foot fell off.

I'm thinking about changing my 335D E92 2dr Sport coupe for a similar 435D coupe when this CV 19 dies down - although I've not driven it this year because of holidays then lock down

The M4 looks nice but my conservative mind goes for a 435D - low miles, used of course, for around £30k

Certainly bold looking. I think it could work. I never liked the kidney grill extended to the lights so pleased they’ve ditched that at least.

I’ve just looked at BMW’s web site, I really like it; a lot.

  17. #17
I was reading the thread thinking I would disagree with the comments (I quite like the grill on the new 1 series and I know it’s not popular) then I saw a pic, it’s awful. Maybe they’ll be some cheap lease deals if they can’t shift them!

    I'm sure it'll do fine.

People (myself included) always like to criticise a design which is "different" - until they get used to it and then it becomes the new normal.

There are a few exceptions to this rule of course... though I'm not sure the 4 series BMW will be one of them. YMMV :-)

List prices are eye watering! 420D M Sport “from” £39k. M440i “from” £54,000.

I agree with this. Once this becomes the new normal, the older style will seem old fashioned.

I find it funny that each iteration of any car has to look more "angry" than the last.

It’s not design, it marketing, if they make the grill that different everyone can see who is driving the old and new models

Someone high up in VAG once told me "the job of a new model is to look deliberately different, so everyone knows you have the new model. The job of a facelift is to make that model look better".

I think BMW took that a bit far this time. A real "wtf".

I like it. Would probably go for the blacked out version of the grille surround as offered on previous versions. The chrome is a bit magpie.

Makes me think that the Alfa Giulia has grown another tooth (and some reliability/build quality),

I always enjoyed the lovely stories of kids in Crewe chasing after Bentley Bentgayers shouting “TWO 99s PLEASE MISTER!”

One imagines they’ll be chasing these shouting “WHAT’S UP, DOC!”

I understand many manufacturers are all aiming squarely at the Chinese market where they perceive a large grille as a higher status car.

It is horrendous. But as a post above alluded to we will get used to it.

I suspect without a front no plate it will look better, in countries who don't require them.

I looked at this thread last night and my eyes hurt seeing the pics of the car...looked again today and I am getting slightly used to it already.

No, I still wouldn't have one!

Looks like an Alpha Romeo front end. Not as bad as expected after reading the comments.

What’s remarkable is how many people at the factory must have seen it prior to sign off And thought “wow that’s horrid” and either said something and been ignored or not said something....

Ford were told by sales director the Edsel designed by Roy Brown was terrible but he was told to FO the brand ran for 2 years before shutting down and lost $250 Million back in 1960...

Bangles BMW designs were ridiculed but became accepted.....this grill is on another level of horrible....
