FORUM OUTAGE TONIGHT, 1 JUNE 2020

Just received notification from the hosting service about the move to a cloud server.

    Hello Eddie,
Just an update on this, I'll work on getting things moved this evening from approximately 9pm onwards I will do my best to keep downtime to a minimum, although there will be roughly 10 minutes of outage whilst the IP addresses are swapped around, I will of course update you again when this has completed.
    Kind Regards,
    Eddie

As much as I like the place - I'm sure we'll cope.

Moving to cloud based staircase is the way, shouldn’t take long at all Eddie we migrate systems with millions of data points in a matter of minutes

It’s ok - you can go to the bear pit and see that before 9pm and again after 9:10 👍

Typical example of how poor the computer geeks are at managing change, the concept of 'right first time' doesn`t exist in their world.

It was the same 20 years ago, nothing improves.

Whoever managed the server change needs a KUTA*

And every watch you ever worked on was 'right first time', I suppose? Mistakes happen in all professions.

No need for the sarcasm. If I was Eddie I`d be furious, a 10 minute outage ends up with the forum being a wreck. What is wrong with these people, surely migrating a server is straightforward thesedays?

As for watches I work on being right first time, in over 95% of cases that is correct. For watches that leave my premises that figure is 99%, bearing in mind I work on some basket cases that's not bad going for a guy who's had minimal professional training. It's all about care. attention to detail, and attitude.

When I had a proper job I was frequently involved in changes involving experimental manufacture in a chemical environment, if we hadn`t got it right first time the consequences could've been dire. We had systems in place that worked and safeguarded against failure. That's why I despair at the way the geeks work, if computer/software changes were needed on the plants I worked on the outcome was never successful without lots of troubleshooting because the geeks always got it wrong. I think its a cultural thing, but I would expect things to be much better thesedays.

Never trust the geeks, I learned that a long time ago.

Many things can indeed go wrong, and it’s a massive site. Overall they had a problem but they solved it well. I’d rather give kudos than kutas in this case.

Way back in the 70s, when computers were very novel, we always referred to the folks who worked on them as 'the geeks'. They tended to be somewhat unusual characters to say the least.

At the end of the day, nobody is saving lives on here - so a few people on the internet didn’t get to talk about watches for a few hours. Inconvenient, and a bit frustrating is pretty much the extent of it.

Things can always go wrong with deployments, all you can do is plan, and try to mitigate the risk as much as possible - and if it does go pear shaped, fix it!

The world kept turning, and now all is well again. Am sure we will all enjoy the long term benefit of the switch to newer tech.

The forum was down for a few hours. Even if it were down for a total of 24 hours every year (and I suspect that the downtime is an awful lot less than that), it would still only equate to 0.274% downtime. Or, to put it another way, around 99.73% uptime.

The geeks are doing a lot better than the watchmakers, aren't they? :-)

Can someone explain why changing from one server to another, in the year 2020, is difficult?

The forum fell over, it failed to function for several hours, hardly a seamless transition. Turn the clock back 15 years and it would've been no surprise, but I genuinely thought the game had moved on.

Plenty of reasons but better to focus on the fact it's here now and you can put the brown paper bag down. Everything will be ok

Did I miss something??? Seriously - I would not have noticed had this notice not been posted.

Seems the BP has moved into WT along with the cloud hosting service?

Nice comparison - I haven’t seen Road House in ages. Watched it when I was about 15 and thought it was amazing. Not sure the years will have been kind to it though!

The forum database is huge and when it was migrated, it somehow doubled up on the tables. Fortunately there was a backup taken immediately before the migration. The reason it took so long to bring it back online was because they wanted to understand what had gone wrong before trying again.

Just out of vulgar curiosity really, but how huge is 'huge' in the case of the underlying datatbase?

    Outage and subsequent issues.

Is it just me but I cannot change the order of posts? I used to always go to date first posted so that I could ensure I saw them all but now it says I have requested an invalid forum.
