    Patio glass just shattered

Just noticed that the glass in one of the patio doors at the side of the house has shattered. We thought we heard a noise like something falling but couldn't work out what it may have been. An hour or so later I noticed that the outside glass was completely shattered.

I'm sure I read something on here a while back that this is something that can happen spontaneously? Any idea what causes it?

Will have to get that pane replaced now and trying to get an idea of costs.

Next door offered to cut our grass, lawn mower threw a stone up. Heard it hit the window with a bang but no damage, two hours later, crack! Window shattered.

The glass can have a flaw in it , something called a Nickel inclusion , causing it to blow under stress at any time .
Simply get two or three quotes . Even if you go to a local glazier and give them a rough size , you could get an idea of cost of the unit .

Perhaps ground settling over time...that last micrometer pushed the glass over its limit?

Thanks chaps. It’s been in about 8 years or so, maybe longer.
Since we had it put in we’ve had loads of work done around the house and garden so it is very possible that something damaged it ages ago but enough to show at the time.

Anyway, time to get some quotes in tomorrow. It’s about 47x175cm.

About £75 for the unit with 2 x 4 mm toughened glass .
Difficult to estimate fitting costs .

I’m a window fitter in Bristol and for a toughened double glazed unit 470mmx1750mm supplied and fitted would be in the region of £125-£150 dependant on glazing specification.

Happened in one of our properties last year. Apparently it does happen.

Thanks for that, very useful to get an idea of costs.
