Wherever I go in this weather I’ll always look for shade, since I was a kid I hated the raw direct sun beaming on me and within about 10 minutes it makes me feel very weird. The missus however could sit out in it all day....god knows how and why.
You're certainly not alone there OP. I'm 53 and up to being in my mid 30's, it wasn't a problem being in direct sunshine. I wasn't a sun sponge sun bather but I work outside so it was essentially unavoidable. One day I woke up with this bloody annoyingly itchy rash on my forearms and since then, more than an hour in direct sun and it's back in a flash. Pi$$es me off big time and is hugely uncomfortable so I avoid it at all costs now right down to wearing long loose sleeved garments to shield myself.
I've tried countless applications of creams and swallowed all kinds of tinctures. E45 itch relief gives me the most respite if I get caught but its 48hrs before it shifts.

This!
Me too, I don't mind doing a bit of a Sunbathing but when I'm done I'm done. No pun intended ;-)
Afterwards, I'll maybe have a beer but have to be in the shade. Can't abide sitting in the sun, especially when I start to leak from every single pore!
You're not alone.
Well I'm happy to read that it's not just me then!
Great to see so many shade-worshippers. :)
Ah, the old 'prickly heat'! Similarly, pre-25 yrs old, as soon as the sun appeared, I was out lapping it up. My old man worked in the Gulf for 5 years in the 80's and like many there, I spent the entirety of my school holidays frying myself in Hawaiian Tropic!
Then, one year in Tenerife I got an attack of itchy, inflamed, bumpy skin. It was horrible. It took me nearly 20 years to find an effective way to manage the symptoms. Anti-hystemines from April along with Piz Buin Allergen 30+ and absolutely avoiding the sun between 1130-1430 means that any tan is slowly, safely earned. If mild symptoms present then I treat them with MagiCool.
love the thought of a bright sunny mediterranean beach, white sands and warmth
but you'd find me under a coastal pine, looking at it from the shade, maybe with a warm onshore breeze.
So, not keen on direct sun.
No, It's not weird.
I don't mind the sun if I am busy doing something useful, and need to do it outside.
But if I needed to lie down somewhere warm with my eyes shut for an hour or two - I can stay in bed.
What is the big fascination of travelling abroad, having a full English breakfast, lying on the beach all day half asleep with your eyes shut, then down to the Irish bar or English pub for the night.
For me a beach holiday is a complete waste of time, effort and money.
I love the sun in moderation. If I'm going to be out in it for a while then a liberal application of sunblock, an antihistamine (I get bad eyes if I'm out in direct sunlight too long), sun glasses and a hat of some sort are essential.
Ideally a holiday abroad should kick off with 2 or so days of a late breakfast sitting by the pool or beach soaking up sun, cocktails and nibbles in roughly equal measure during the day and a nice local meal in the evening and early to bed to get over the jet lag. Then once acclimated off to do stuff and see the sights, with a few days here and there relaxing by the pool again to recover your energy - I'm not as young as I once was.
I too hate sitting in direct sun, I enjoy a warm sunny day sitting out in the garden, but preference by a mile is always to enjoy it from the shade. I also have fair skin, plus don’t enjoy sitting and sweating loads in direct sunshine.
I like the sun in moderation, I’ll walk for a couple of hours in direct sun but I prefer shade for sitting around. Can’t sunbathe, I get bored, beaches are a no-no because I dislike getting sand stuck on me. Modern sun creams are excellent, if I didn’t use suncream I’d burn easily, I have to be careful. Years ago I got sunstroke on holiday, believe me its not nice.
I tolerate heat well, years of running and training in hot weather has helped, but I don’t like it too hot.
My wife and MIL struggle to sit in the sun for any longer than 5 mins, but me, I love it.
Well as someone who has avoided this sun my entire life as per my previous post. This afternoon I have been referred to a skin cancer specialist due to a suspect looking mole! I am not even 40 yet!
Go figure!!!
Can't understand it myself. Tanned skin makes one look like a common workman.
17-18°C preferred. Long sleeved shirts only, but always with the sleeves rolled up...
