    Private registration lost?

Years back I had a number plate on retention and let the retention slip. It was never attached to a car.

Curious if there is any way to have it reinstated.

The plate in question, on checking it, doesn’t appear to exist these days (ie it’s not been assigned elsewhere).

Has anyone any experience of getting ia registration back, or is it a lost cause?

If it has gone back to the pot, you should be able to buy it back again.
Hopefully no-one else has found it first.

If a plate is on retention already by someone else, it will be unavailable, with no easy way to trace the current owner.

20-years ago we bought a new plate from dvla, and the best way to check availability was via a phone call. A real person might be able to help you out, rather than an online purchase at full price.

In my experience, I’m afraid it’s a lost cause. Reg will now be gone forever...

Or until the dvla decide that there’s money in reissuing them back into the market!

I did this accidentally a few years ago. I was nearly two years over. I just rang them up and They were perfectly happy for me to just pay the retention fee again - which I did for ten years.

    Worth a try.
So clever my foot fell off.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Thanks for that - already planned to, but it’s good to know it’s not completely a lost cause. Mine’s considerably longer than 2 years mind you 🙈

Try it, do it now. I missed a retention renewal by a year and just filled in the forms and sent payment. Got it back!

I was 5 years out and got it back by paying the fees that would have been due.
