Thread: Worst watch advertising ever?

  1. #51
The purpose of advertising is to increase demand.

As to how it works, which this thread has veered into, this might help:

The Tudor David Beckham "Born to Dare" thing that's plastered all over the place has almost put me off the brand completely. It's lazy, cheesy and makes it seem like the kind of thing you'd find in TK Maxx. "Would sir like a Burberry hat and Adidas tracksuit with that?"

The only possible sliver of hope is that they completely ruin the brand like they did previously, shut up shop again and it goes back to being an obscure WIS brand that isn't tainted in the way that Tag and Rolex are.

That's the bus that takes you to the plane at the airport. You can tell because it's in an airport. They don't have those dangly things on normal buses either.

(and I quite like that one)

Lol. Breitling advertising has always been particularly cringey in my opinion.

I'm sure it's not the kind of association they're going for at all, but it makes me feel like a person wearing one might smell like Lynx Africa.

No, that was just the warming up.

My feeling is they must have been trying to ride the "50 shades of grey" thing that was going on a few years back.

I thought the vintage IWC had not aged well, but then Mariner showed up. Kings of Cringe.

There was a promo shot for the Rufus Sewell TV Series "The Man in the high Castle" (although I can't find it now!) that feature him in full SS regalia and his son in Hitler Youth uniform that looked exactly like a PP "You never own a PP..." photo, too.

Maybe Breitling should feature Stukas in future?

I think it's rather clever. Remember Alan Clarks dig at Michael Heseltine, - he had to buy his own furniture.

It implies the old upper class cliche that decent people never bought anything because they inherited everything their parents owned.

So not only is a Patek Phillipe the supreme watch, so are it's owners.

It may upset those who cannot afford it but it certainly makes the current owners feel good.

Perhaps we need a separate forum thread on best watches by World War II alliance. I think the neutrals might have it on this occasion…

That rather makes advertising irrelevant, though, doesn't it?

A bit like advertising 'emigrate to [pick your country]' only to residents of that country.

Although it does seem to reinforce the impression that it's all about smug self-satisfaction...

Its not the advertising so much that irritates, as the marketing BS that accompanies it. Just seen on the Yema website they have a watch that apparently commemorates some sort of French Air Force zero-G flights (presumably like NASA's 'vomit-comet' astronaut training flights). The blurb declares that its "canvas strap has been specifically designed to withstand extreme in-flight conditions when in microgravity" !! Is a couple of seconds of low gravity that demanding? I'd have thought that normal gravity is far more demanding! What BS!

I was also annoyed by some crap ad from Jura watches advertising a special 'Military Issue' G-shock - for a mere £400. I really can't see any squaddies forking out £400 for a watch - at least for combat or training use. May suit Walter Mitty types though.

If it really was 'Military Issue' the taxpayer would be forking out the money and it might be that Casio flog them to the military at a loss, with a view to selling them to those who value such things at a premium.

It certainly wouldn't be unusual for the taxpayer to be paying a shedloads over the odds for the military to have something just so that it provided some minor and quite likely irrelevant difference to a commercial version.

The Jaeger-Lecoultre Navy Seals Automatic at in excess of £5K was the ultimate Walt watch I think - for Guys filling out spreadsheets to occasionally look out of the window and know in their heart that it could have been them who took out Bin Laden.

It's aimed at current PP owners just to reinforce the impression and hope that they will buy another one.

It is also aimed at us lowly plebs who aspire to become one of the elite, at least watch wise.

It's the same as Rolls Royce / Bentley, convince the perspective buyer that he is one of the few and not of the many. Rightly or wrongly it works.
