Thread: Acid indigestion after drinking water?

    Acid indigestion after drinking water?

At first I assumed it was something I’d eaten but with being off work for 7 weeks I’ve narrowed the acid reflux down to water drinking. During lockdown I never suffered once but soon as I returned to work it started almost straight away.
If I drink tea, coffee, squash, milk it’s fine, if I have a litre of water throughout the day it triggers terrible reflux which can last for hours. Dinner in then evening or a few Rennie generally shift it. Does/has anyone else suffered from this?

A glass of milk might help as that's an Alkaline and it should neutralise the excess acid.

I have had something similar for a few months. I have had it checked by docs and nothing really showing up so they just suggest a food diary and the like.

I had never thought it could be water drinking...I drink a lot of water too!

Can I ask, when you say reflux what actually happens and what are the symptoms?

So it doesn’t start straightaway, probably about an hour from when I’ve drank.
It’s just a typical acid indigestion sensation and pain that starts low down and slowly rises up to the throat.
I don’t drink water at home and it’s generally tea, squash, coke and milk.
I take a lite of water to work and 2 days back after lockdown and it’s started again
I take sandwiches and crisps and fruit for dinner and it’s not that

It’s an odd one. Have you tried drinking bottled water/filtered water and all the other options?

I’ve never had it from water itself (usually drink filtered or tap and lots of it) but Yerba mate can give me a slight “heartburn” feeling, when I drink a lot of it.

My dad had the same problem and it was the water he used at work. When not working, it all went away.

Please consider consulting a medical practitioner. Could be something simple ... but might be something not so simple. I had similar symptoms and was referred to a consultant who via a gastroscopy diagnosed a hiatus hernia ... fairly common malady and easily remedied via medication and diet. A gastroscopy investigation is a simple procedure taking less than 20 minutes in an out-patient clinic. Two friends ignored their similar symptoms and did not seek advice / treatment. Their reflux continued for months and they both ended up very seriously ill. If symptoms persist, you should consider insisting on a referral to a specialist.

GP visit is a must Franky. However, don’t worry until you have cause to! Water can cause heartburn, though it usually eases it. You live in a hard water area....

One thing, I believe you have just moved house (remember your mentioned it). Has that coincided with any of your issues?

Strangest thing is that I never suffer at any other time. I can eat a hot curry, chinese etc and get nothing. If I took squash tomorrow to work it would be fine but if I didn’t have any and just take water it would more than likely come on after a few hours. I was wondering if it’s the chlorine in the water and the squash could be possibly some how neutralising it.

Might do.....have you chatted to near neighbours? Google search on ph influence of adding fruit squash to water has drawn a blank.

I’ve had reflux for about 8 years and I am now on daily medication (Omeprazole) to control it. I have found that coffee and/or chocolate can be a real problem and I think the water acts by increasing the volume in the stomach and stirring things up.

Try cutting out one thing at a time and sipping smaller quantities of water.

Definitely see a doctor and if you are referred for an endoscopy, take the option of sedation. It’s not a comfortable experience but a must to make sure there’s nothing serious going on.

Acid reflux can cause serious illness so I wouldn’t put up with it - see your GP when you can.

^^^^^^^^^ definitely go to the doc ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I had similar symptoms although not with specifically with water. As, sundial, mentioned I had an endoscopy procedure (google it - sounds worse than it actually is, but I did have an anaesthetic - you get a choice) and I was diagnosed with a sliding hiatus hernia. Basically the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm which allows the acid to come up into your oesophagus and causes pain and heartburn. Apparently it is quite a common in men over 50. Some people don't even know they have the condition.

Experts think it could be hereditary and not necessarily lifestyle the causes. I have cleaned up my diet - all the obvious like low fat, veg and fresh products, limited caffeine, choc, alcohol and no smoking. Some spices and orange juice and tomatoes (high acid) can really aggravate. Also try not to overeat and have regular small meals as opposed to 10 pints and a curry in one go!

I follow this procedure and take a PPI tablet (Lansaprozole) to reduce stomach acid. It works but if I neglect my routine I get my symptoms again.
(PPI have their issues which you should read about if you have to take them but not having them would make your condition worse.

Hopefully it's nothing but - Deffo go to the doc - it might be nothing but if it is more serious, as mentioned already, if left untreated could be much worse outcome.

I suffer from reflux and take omeprazole for it. I had a gastroscopy a couple of years ago and opted to have it without sedation. I didn't appreciate that the fibre optic is about an inch wide. I had in mind something about 1/4" or less. Made me gip a bit when they inserted and it took a lot of concentration & mind over matter to be able to breathe for the duration. Thankfully everything looked normal. I'd go for the sedative if I had it again.
