    Looking again I think you are right. Looked too dark to be a slow worm to me at first but I can see it doesn't have the grass snake markings to the side of the head.

    I knew what it was. A slow worm. That’s why I allowed my daughter to handle it and assured her it was harmless.

    Yep you're right chum, also a grass snake is frequently though not always more like a dark emerald green, and the head shape isn't usually so rounded.
