If I'm not mistaken, they're made with suiting material which is dry clean only. Good luck with that.

I'm just about to send off a couple of worn-out shirts to our alterations tailor for conversion.
    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

I got sent a huge box of those for free (from China) so I imagine they’re quite cheap to buy

Anyone notice the number of people wearing valved dust type masks, absolutely useless in stopping
you spreading it which still seems the most likely benefit of wearing one.

I have two shemagh I’ll tie around my face if its a requirement. Probably as good as most available masks in practice .

I was considering a £30 cycling mask N95 but the only available ones are on ebay at £120 each last time I checked.

£20 seems pricey given it's only effective for up to 3 washes ?

I like the idea but the website makes it look like snake oil.

I work for a company supply dentists,

KN95 masks currently £ 5-7 each (KN and N are the same KN is Chinese standard)
IIR3 50 masks £ 7 (these were £1 a few months ago! Surgical mask with by dentist to protect patient not wearer)

Demonloop = if a friend in China sent you a box he’s a good friend (or bad if they are fakes) but I think what it shows is that in China they are pretty cheap, it’s just as they pass hands and shipping to get to the UK they gain cost and value.

If you can risk the disappointment of a "no show", and wait 2-3 months for delivery,

Paper surgical masks are around 20p each (50/£12 or 200/£35)
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000...4c874c4dzYIbVK

    Washable cotton = 66p each

I will let you know in August if these masks are any good.

Correct - next to useless and no mention of any proper standards or certification.

There will be loads of stuff like this - great opportunity to make money out of a disaster selling snake oil.

There is a fine line between 'nothing' and 'better than nothing' whereby the individual has a false sense of security but very little actual protection, which leads to some complacency when the best thing is to be more aware.

Are they much worse than surgical masks which aren’t air-tight and often worn very loose?

Might stop directly breathing aerosols on someone but air-borne virus will easily get past.

It would be better if everyone bar NHS personnel (who require better protection for obvious reasons) wore surgical masks when likely to walk near people. Those masks would not be to protect the wearer, but everyone else by stopping efficiently the output of droplets, thus reducing the safe social distance with no ill consequence for the wearer.

That isn’t happening so people will be safer wearing FP3 respirators (which will also stop most droplets).

If only droplets we’re worried about, a scarf or whatever will stop those, certification or not.

Might stop it spreading as far as it would if you cough or sneeze without one but your basically exhaling through the valve
without filtration, they are only designed to filter when you inhale.

I eventually caved in and ordered some from a medical supply company. Type II R. £1.20 a piece!!

At least they are supplied as meeting some defined standard. Whether that makes them better than the ones on Amazon and eBay, who knows?!
