    Sandblasting ?

    Evening gents
Is anyone sandblasting watch cases ? I think it is nicer than shiney !!

Just be aware that blasted cases show every single rub and scratch beyond belief with no way to touch up short of a total re blast.

I was just about to start a thread to ask this exact same question (almost), but in relation to clasps. I've got a Eulit perlon, with a shiny clasp, on a bead-blasted titanium watch, which looks a bit silly. Eulit clasps are all polished steel.

Is there a way, without specialist equipment, to get a close approximation of a bead blasted finish? Or is it remotely economical to send it to someone to get it done properly?

A jewellery tumbler with some appropriate media can get something similar in finish. But they aren't cheap to buy for a job that small.

There will be somebody who knows somebody with a media blaster. I lost the contacts I had, sorry.

One idea that came to mind was to use some kind of container attached to a watch winder, which would do the job of a jewellery tumbler, I expect. Wasn't sure what sort of finish this would produce though as I thought they are normally used for polishing.

Use a Scotchbrite pad - you'll find one by the thing in the kitchen that she calls a sink ;-)

You could go for different levels of sandpaper attached to something small like a dremel or stick I guess. Would take a while and require a keen eye and hand !

Have you tried this ? How did it turn out, he asked knowingly ??
I can tell you, it will have inconsistent scratches, be heavily directional and look shit; just like sandblasting doesn't !

Yeah. It’s a pretty fine job. I haven’t tried it but would agree with you. Would be hard to pull off and nowhere near the results of sandblasting. There is just simply too many curves and edges.

I still have fine and coarse beadblasting cabinet set up.

Sand blasting technically is ILLEGAL due to its silica content, have to use silica free blast media.

Would that be the same kit you used to give some polished buckles a Damasko finish for me some years ago? I can put up before and after pics if it is.
