I find as I get older I am becoming less interested in cars. I went through a stage of 22 continuous years running Jaguars ranging from MK11s, 4.2 XJCs and finally XJs. I bought a new Honda Civic when I retired as a sort of economy measure but after a couple of years of doing limited mileage due to living in Spain for 5 months a year, I fancied something a bit different and after looking at XFs plus a few Mercs I decided to stick with the Honda.

The one car that I fancied when I was younger was an Alvis TE21, the one with twin headlights. It was a cut above Jaguars and I just could not afford to buy it when I was stationed at Alvis by the MOD in the late 1970s.

In those days large factories such as Alvis employed a resident doctor to look after the health of employees. The Doctor had a new Alvis every two years as part of his package and he took me for a spin when he knew I was interested in buying it. It was the best car I had ever been in and it seemed years ahead of its time. It was a pure pleasure to drive, but a hefty mortgage and with a wife and kids to support meant it was only a dream.

Six years ago, I thought it was time to treat myself to an Alvis and I managed to hunt down an absolute gem which looked and drove like the day it came off the production line. This is where reality suddenly set in, sixty years of continuous improvement means that even the mundane and common as muck Honda Civic outperformed the Alvis in every way.

I continue to drive the Civic quite happily.

Mick P - were you Coventry based then? I went to school opposite the Alvis factory, family worked there, by the railway.

The Ferrari FXX K is outrageously loud, always look forward to seeing them at Goodwood. The McLarens by comparison are soulless. The 918 Porsche is ballistically fast and love those RUF CTR2s along with the Mercedes CLK GTR

I was based at Alvis during 1975 - 1979 and it was in the Holyhead Road by a bridge with a clock on it. The factory has now long gone and is some sort of out of town shopping centre. I don't recall any school being near there. I know the original factory was heavily bombed during the war and they moved out to the Holyhead Road.

I actually lived in Leamington Spa.

Scenery is awesome but some of those cars are outstanding. What a noise and a buzz that must be, to either be there or to drive one...

Same place Mick. My school was on Barkers Butts Lane which is the next block over from the bridge you are talking about. It was the back end of part of the carbodies factory. Actually not strictly part of Alvis but they made lots of bodies for them before the Taxis.. The retail park is the Alvis Retail park not surprisingly. I think Red Triangle in Kenilworth now hold the rights to the name.
My uncle used to take armoured cars and small tanks home for lunch occasionally. Grandmother never knew which was forward when he left! A friend has a TA14 drop head and a 12/50. I've driven the 12/50, surprisingly small inside for a big car and the pedals take a bit of getting used to with a central accelerator. The ta is still a work in progress but a more "modern" car.

Have had a Manhart tuning box on mine for 4yrs now without any issues. However I also have KW coilovers too, which are by far the best mod you can possibly do to these cars, long before the upgrade in power.

Yep, KW are very good, just fitted the AP big brake kit which is nice, gone as far as I want to go apart from a power upgrade. This is my third M and they are just getting better and better, looking forward to the G80 but gawd knows when that will appear.

Yep, when you are a car guy it gives you a buzz on the rare occasions you lift the bonnet, never tried the carbon dipping but heard some good reports and you don’t need to sell a kidney.
